Top Movies To See At TIFF 2015

It’s hard to believe TIFF is quickly approaching once again, and it’s even harder to believe that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the acclaimed film festival. This year it runs from September 10 to 20, and like usual it has several highly anticipated films premiering. Here are some of the top you don’t want to miss.

The opening night film of the Toronto International Film Festival this year is by Canadian director Jean-Marc Vallee called Demolition. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal as a grieving husband who watches his life unravel after the death of his wife. Things don’t start to change until he meeting a customer service rep played by Naomi Watts who helps his rebuild, which is starts doing by demolishing the house he shared with his wife.

Ridley Scott has had an interesting career full of hits, misses and cult favourites. The Martian is his latest venture, starring Matt Damon as an astronaut presumed dead and stranded on Mars, and forced to find somehow to survive on the barren planet while his crew attempts to rescue him. the all-star cast includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Pena, Kate Mara and Chiwetel Ejiofor. With the success of Gravity a couple of years back, The Martian is sure to be a popular movie at this year’s festival.

Making it’s Canadian premiere is Black Mass, a film that many are hoping brings star Johnny Depp back from the put he’s sunk into recently. It’s the true story of FBI Agent John Connolly and notorious gangster Jimmy Bulger, who team up to take down a common enemy, the Italian Mob.

The Lobster has all ready been screened overseas, and by the looks of things it is as odd as it sounds. It’s about a dystopian near future where single people either find a matching mate in 45 days or they are turned into animals and released into the woods. Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz, John C. Reilly and Lea Seydoux star in this bizarre science fiction comedy.

Denis Villeneuve has really come a long way as a filmmaker, and his latest, Sicario, looks to continue his upward trend. It stars Emily Blunt as an FBI Agent enlisted to join in the war against a Mexican drug lord and forced to make a difficult decision that will make her question everything she believes.

With a cast starring Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, and Stanley Tucci, you just know Spotlight will be something special. It’s the true story about the Boston Globe investigation into allegations of sexual abuse in the Catholic Church that rocked the city and around the world.

And if documentaries are your thing, then perhaps you just might want to check out Michael Moore’s latest, Where To Invade Next. In it Moore tells the Pentagon that from now on he will do the invading for America. Moore managed to avoid global media as he discretely shot in several countries.
