Jennifer Lawrence Confirms X-Men Departure, But Is It Really A Big Loss?
Oscar winning actress Jennifer Lawrence confirmed yesterday that the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse will be the last time she dons the blue make-up and body suit to play the mutant Mystique. She dropped the bomb during an interview with MTV News, but didn’t elaborate further. Rumor has it that Lawrence’s character plays an even bigger role in Apocalypse, which is set for a 2016 release. Sure losing Lawrence is a big deal, after all she has her own fans that come out to watch the movies simply because she is one of the stars of it, but in the long run is her departure such a big loss?
Lawrence came on board with the X-Men: First Class film, that was meant to be a reboot of the mutant franchise. The filmmakers got lucky, after all they had signed Lawrence before she became as big of as a star as she is now, even though she had all ready been nominated for an Academy Award for Winter’s Bone. By the time the second movie in the series came out last year Lawrence had become a mega-star, thanks to roles in The Hunger Games, Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle. Still does her name alone make the X-Men films as successful as they are? We don’t think so.
Rebecca Romijn who played the role of Mystique in the earlier X-Men movies didn’t have a lot of acting experience before she took on the role, and she did just fine with it. In fact a lot of fans of the X-Men series think she even did a better job of giving her an edge. Lawrence was just getting started in the industry herself when she appeared in the first movie, and it wasn’t because of her name that made the film a hit. Looking at the character’s physical appearance Mystique is not only blue and scaly, but she is a shape-shifter as well, which means you don’t see a lot of whichever actress plays her without the makeup.
So really, what does this tell us? If the casting director does their job properly, they can easily find a replacement for the role. They need a physically fit woman who doesn’t mind spending hours in a makeup chair each day, who can give her character a little bit of an edge. We’re sure Hollywood has plenty of those. And as for the name recognition thing, The X-Men will continue drawing huge audiences no matter who is wearing the blue makeup.
