1. James Cameron
By far, one of the most well known Canadian directors is James Cameron. Born in Kapuskasing, Ontario, Cameron first found success when he directed The Terminator in 1984, followed by the second sequel. But it was when he directed and released the classic film, Titanic, that put him in the big league. Bet you didn’t know that! After the major success of Titanic, Cameron began his 10 year project of his “next big thing.” What is that you may ask? That’s right, it was one of the most anticipated, box office films in 2009, grossing over $2 billion. This film is none other than Avatar and we’re excited because Cameron is said to have signed to produce three more sequels to follow this major movie hit!
2. Ivan Reitman
Born in Czechoslovakia, Ivan and his family came to Canada in 1950 as refugees where he eventually settled in Toronto and attended McMasterUniversity. He’s been a director of many loved American Hollywood comedy films including Ghostbusters, Space Jam, I Love You Man, Up In The Air, No Strings Attached and Hitchcock. He certainly has a great list of experience and celebrities he’s worked with lined in his career!
3. Denis Villeneuve
Born in Gentilly, Quebec, Denis only just began to gain recognition for his recent films, Prisoners and Enemy. Both films starred Jake Gyllenhaal and premiered at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival. We are definitely excited to see what more Denis has in store for us in the future for the success of these two great thriller films!
