Barenaked Ladies Prove They’ve Still Got It

After 25 years creating hits and a bit of band drama, Barenaked Ladies hit the stage in their hometown of Toronto last night to prove they’ve still got it. There was a time when everyone adored the Barenaked Ladies’ music and they were on every hit radio station, but as time has passed, they aged, and lost a crucial member to the band, some people have doubted them. Watching them on stage at the Molson Amphitheatre, you wouldn’t know they had aged a bit.

They did hit the stage a little bit slow. We wanted them to come out guns blazing with a big hit that would get everyone riled up, but instead they came out with a whisper of a new song that didn’t make an impact. They were clearly just getting their feet wet because they appealed to the crowd who has grown up listening to the Barenaked Ladies music with old hits and favourites.

They mixed a good amount of music their newer albums, including their latest Grinning Streak, with fan favourites like “One Week”, “Be My Yoko Ono”, “Pinch Me” and of course “If I Had $1000000”. It was amazing to be in this crowd of Canadians who grew up with this music and listen to everyone sing along. It felt like we were all having a very Canadian moment from the band to the venue to the preferred choice of drink in the crowd (Molson Canadian of course).

In all honesty, the newer songs didn’t go over so well, but that didn’t matter. It felt like Barenaked Ladies know that is something they need to overcome, so they add their own brand of humour and fun into the concert. They improvise, rap and end the show with some hilarious mashups of Taylor Swift, Daft Punk, and Manfred Mann’s “Blinded By The Light”.

Barenaked Ladies may not be chart toppers anymore, but this way a fun light night that was suitable for everyone. From cuddling couples to college buddies to families that included both the new toddler and the grandparents, all ages and races were in the crowd bonding over one of our national treasures.
