FanExpo 2012 Opening Day Review

Like Comicon in San Diego, FanExpo in Toronto is a place for fans of science fiction, horror, comic books, video and role-playing games and anime to gather together and celebrate their love for all things geeky. The event is the largest of its kind Canada, and once again this year the show is something to behold.

Fan Expo 2012 began Thursday evening at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in the heart of downtown Toronto, and unlike previous years the first evening was fairly busy with fans from all across North America gathering to see their idols. The Incredible Hulk star Lou Ferrigno has started the day off by cutting the ribbon and opening the festivities, and he was available throughout the night for photo opportunities and autographs. Many of the scheduled celebrities (including Norman Reedus and Jon Bernthal of The Walking Dead, Nelsan Ellis of True Blood, Rose McGowan and Christopher Lloyd) weren’t there for the opening day, but many of the fans who have picked up weekend long passes didn’t seem to mind. They were distracted by the plethora of comic book artists selling their art and signing autographs, the ability to play new and unreleased video games such as Halo 4 and WWE 13 and even genre speed dating.

One special attraction at this year’s FanExpo is the Art of Frankenweenie exhibit that showcases the art and props used in making the upcoming Tim Burton movie. If you are a fan of Burton’s style, you will enjoy this exhibit that includes some of the actual puppets from the movie.

The highlight of the evening was Stan Lee, the legendary 89 year old creator of some of comic book’s greatest heroes. The Marvel Comics icon was in town to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Spider-Man, and if you were one of the lucky few you were able to get your picture taken with him, and have him sign one item of your choosing. He is set to be one of the top attractions all weekend long.

Whether you are there to see some of your favourite movie and television stars, buy merchandise you can’t find elsewhere, or attend an information event, there is something for everyone at FanExpo 2012, which is open again Friday from 10-7, Saturday 10-7 and Sunday 10-5. At the very least it’s fun to see all the different people dressed up in costumes.
