Music Review: Justin Bieber – Believe
After years of the world epidemic known as Bieber fever, Canada’s hottest commodity Justin Bieber has released his second album, Believe, trying to prove he’s more than just a teen heartthrob. Can he outgrow ‘Baby’ and make a career out of this that will grow with him?
Bieber seems to be following in the footsteps of another very famous Justin who hit the music scene as an adorable blonde with a trademark hairstyle and falsetto voice. Anyone of a certain age will be reminded of Justin Timberlake when skimming through the songs on Believe. It starts off with some big dance club worthy beats featuring rapper Ludacris to show he is older now and can be a little more edgy and bad. From there we move into the first single ‘Boyfriend’ which screams JT in every note.
Overall Believe is a mix of dance beats and sweet, albeit cheesy and over the top, ballads. This is the exact recipe for a hot pop album to get young girls screaming. Following in Justin Timberlake’s post N’Sync career was possibly the smartest move Bieber could have taken. Even if you are adamantly anti-Bieber you can hear that this is a solid album. With appearances from Drake and Nicki Minaj, it’s clear that the hottest acts in the industry have embraced him.
Believe is long. At 16 tracks, he is giving his fans their money’s worth. After a while, it just becomes background music and you forget that you were enjoying this at one point. Even if you can’t make it through the album, skip to the hilarious bonus track, ‘Maria’ about the woman who claimed she had Justin’s baby last year. Justin tries to play the song straight, but it’s bizarre. He is giving this weird woman exactly what she wanted with a whole song about her.
Strange stalker finale aside, Believe is a really strong album. It’s the perfect launching ground for an album that could take Justin into his 20’s. He just needs to work every day to not drift into the land of lost teen idols.
