Movies Opening January 13th, 2012

After a couple of Fridays with very few new movies opening, we finally see some fresh flicks hitting the theatres.  It sounds like a veritable smorgasbord of genres, with an action, a comedy, a biography, a cartoon and a horror.  The one with the best chance of topping the box office is a re-release however, which means technically a new movie won’t bring the most money in.

From an Academy Award nominated performance in last year’s The Fighter to what is sure to be one of this year’s most poorly received movies Contraband, Mark Wahlberg certainly knows how to choose vastly different roles.   This time he plays a former smuggler who finds himself dragged back into crime to protect his family.  Kate Beckinsale, Ben Foster and Giovianni Ribisi co-star.

Dolly Parton hasn’t graced the big screen with her presence since 2002, but in Joyful Noise she’s back.  She plays one of two choir leaders (Queen Latifah is the other) attempting to help the local church choir win a national competition.  This movie will probably fade away quickly and be released on BluRay before the end of next month.

The Iron Lady has been already garnering rave reviews for Meryl Streep’s performance as former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.  Unfortunately the movie itself isn’t receiving many other positive comments.  Streep will probably be seen come Oscar time, but the movie won’t be known for very much else.

The only Disney cartoon to receive an Academy Award nomination for best picture is back, and this time it’s in 3D.  Beauty and the Beast was a huge hit back in 1991, and after the huge success of the Lion King’s re-release last year in 3D Disney pulled out the big guns.   It’s sure to be the top this weekend, considering the weak competition.

Last week a horror movie dominated the box office, which means the makers of The Divide are probably hoping for more of the same results.  The movie is about a group of nuclear survivors hiding away in a basement together, watching their supplies dwindle and their fear grow.
