2012 Golden Globes Winners And Recap
When it was announced that Ricky Gervais was back for a third year in a row as host of the Golden Globes people didn’t know what to expect. Especially since last year his cutting/sarcastic sense of humor got him in some hot water. He really took it to people last year for how fake Hollywood was, and some of the actors took offense to him. This year however he seemed rather tame. He still got some great jokes in, but overall the punch from the previous years was gone. His best lines were at the expense of Kim Kardashian. During his monologue he said “The Golden Globes are to the Oscars what Kim Kardashian is to Kate Middleton. A bit louder. A bit traisher. A bit drunker. And more easily bought — allegedly, nothing’s been proved.” Later on he said “Kim Kardashian and some guy no one can ever remember … a marriage that lasted 72 days. I’ve sat through longer James Cameron acceptance speeches.” Still, over all he did a nice job as the host.
As for the awards themselves, the George Clooney movie The Descendants, and the near-silent black and white movie The Artist took home the most awards. The Brad Pitt baseball flick Moneyball and the comedy Bridesmaids were both shut out from receiving any awards. Toronto born acting legend Christopher Plummer took home his first Golden Globe at the age of 82 for his supporting role in The Beginners, and the legendary Meryl Streep added yet another award to her mantle for playing Margaret Thatcher. Madonna’s movie W.E. may be getting trashed by critics, but it won the music superstar an award for best original song.
On the TV side of things Homeland and Modern Family took home the bests show awards for their categories, while movie stars Laura Dern and Kate Winslet won acting awards for their turn on television. Peter Dinklage won for his role on Game of Thrones, and during his acceptance speech he mentioned the name Martin Henderson and encouraged people to Google him. It quickly became a trending topic on Twitter, and a took search topic on Google. People discovered a sad story about a badly injured dwarf who was tossed by drunken patrons of a pub on October 7th.
Over all the night was fairly tame with few surprises, but still an entertaining event to watch. If this is to be considered a forerunner for the Academy Awards, then it appears as if it’s going to be a two headed race between The Artist and The Descendants.
