Movies Opening November 23rd, 2011

With it being Thanksgiving in the U.S. this week, most movies got an early start to their weekend opening yesterday instead of tomorrow.  There is also a very family themed selection of new movies, including the returning Muppets, a new Martin Scorsese flick, and a new Christmas tale, but there is also a new movie from the mind of David Cronenburg.  With Twilight holding a firm grasp on the top spot at the box office, it will be interesting to see if any of the new movies can challenge it for the lead.

The Muppets bring back our favorite TV characters from the 70’s to the big screen, including Missy Piggy, Fozzie the Bear, and of course Kermit the Frog.  While always a favorite among die hard fans, the Muppets have had a hard time at the box office in recent years.  This movie however is all ready attracting a lot of attention, and it seems like Kermit and the gang may just be relevant once more.  Of all the new movies opening,t his one has the best shot at challenging Twilight.

It’s hard to imagine Martin Scorsese directing a children’s flick, or a 3D flick for that matter, but that’s just what he’s done with Hugo.  It takes place in 1930’s Paris, where a young boy who lives in the walls of a train station sets out on an adventure to solve a mystery about his late father.

Arthur Christmas unfortunately looks like one of those put together at the last minute holiday movies.  This one is an animated tale about Santa’s youngest son, who uses his father’s high-tech equipment to go on an urgent mission.  It’s made by the folks who bring us Wallace and Grommit, which probably means it will do better over seas than it will in North America.

And for those of you not interested in Children’s fare, David Cronenburg brings us A Dangerous Method.  Based on a play, that was based on a novel, which was based on a true story, A Dangerous Method is about the relationship between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freud, and the patient that comes between them.  Watch for our review of this movie on Saturday.
