Interview With Keshia Chante – “I know Exactly Who I Am Now”

Canadian pop singer Keshia Chante exploded big with hit singles and  Juno Award wins through her teens, but for the past four years, she has been noticeably absent from the music scene. Now older and wiser, the petite pop star is back with her new disc, Night & Day, offering fans a look at both sides of her personality. Real Style Network chatted with Keshia just days after the album dropped to find out where she’s been and why she decided that this was her year to return.

Real Style Network: Was it a conscious decision to wait so long to release a new album?
Keshia Chante: I just wanted to really get into my song writing. It was just a feeling where I was like, ‘I don’t really think I am in that thought process right now.’ When you are doing something from the age of 13, you don’t necessarily like the same things that you did when you were 13 at 19 years old. I just wanted to figure out the industry: How can I have more control in what I am doing? How can I be a better songwriter? What do I want to say? What do I want to project to the world? I think 19 is a really funny age, because you are trying to figure out who you are. It’s hard to try to figure out who you are and project at the same time. So, I just wanted to take some time out and it worked perfectly.

Real Style Network: So you felt like this was a good time and you are ready to come back now?
Keshia Chante: Yeah. I feel like I found my voice. I feel like I know exactly who I am and what kind of music I want to make. I think that’s really cool, because I didn’t know that before.

Real Style Network: What was the deciding factor when you knew you were ready?
Keshia Chante: Once I started to make music that I was really excited about. When I started writing ‘Pillow Talk’, ‘If You Say’, ‘Jersey Up’ and some other songs… when I started making that type of music I thought, ‘Ok, I feel good about it now. I can stand behind this.’

Real Style Network: You also did a little bit of acting in your time off too.
Keshia Chante: Yeah, I took some classes too. I am a part of a movie that is coming out in January. The details will be coming out soon, but it’s called Sunshine Sketches Of A Little Town. I felt that acting was similar to things I had done before, in terms of music videos, for understanding position and conveying emotion with film. There is that aspect of it. The only difference is that in music it is authentically you, whereas in acting you have to play something else.

Real Style Network: What made you decide to split the album into Night and Day?
Keshia Chante: I started making sadder, introspective music. It was a little edgier. It was more therapy for me as a songwriter. Once I was done going through that phase, I wanted to make dance music. I was feeling good at the time. I wanted to make something fun and upbeat. I was over the sad, sappy stuff. At the end I had two bodies of work that were literally like night and day. It just made sense. I didn’t want to be confined to one genre, so let’s mix it up and do both.

Real Style Network: Originally it was going to be a double disc. Why is it only one now?
Keshia Chante: It was going to be a two disc, but once we saw that it was going to be more expensive for my fans I didn’t think it was fair. It was going to be way more expensive. Albums are usually $9.99. It would have taken it to $15 or $16. That’s just how it is with retailers. I thought it was not worth it. I would have rather it been all on one cd. I just didn’t want that to happen. I didn’t think that was fair.
