Movies Opening August 5th, 2011
August is always an interesting month for movies, and you never quite know what you’ll find. A lot of the time this is where the movies Hollywood isn’t quite sure where to place on the schedule open, and sometimes there is a rare gem in the mix. This week you’ve got a remake of a popular sci-fi series, a new comedy, and another based on a true story movie.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes is the latest in the Planet of the Apes series, and the first since Tim Burton butchered the series in 2001. This time around it’s a prequel, showing how the apes managed to get their intelligence and how they started to take over the world. James Franco plays a scientist looking for a cure to Alzheimer’s by experimenting on a chimpanzee named Caesar. This could very easily be a huge hit as it could be a flop. Keep an eye out for our review on Saturday.
Jason Bateman, Ryan Reynolds and Olivia Wilde have all been in movies this summer all ready, but The Change-Up is their first time together. In this movie Bateman and Reynolds star as best friends who accidentally switch bodies and get a chance to live the other’s life. The trailer’s make it look funny, but the premise has been done plenty of times before so it’ll take a lot to make this one unique.
The last movie opening this weekend is The Whistleblower. This movies is the true story based on the life of Kathryn Bolkovac, played by Rachel Weisz. She’s a Nebraska police officer who agrees to take a one year contract position in Bosnia after the war, and who uncovers a sex-trade operation being run by the very people the Bosnians are trusting to protect them.
