Movies Opening August 12th, 2011

This weeks has 4 new releases, and from the variety of genres it appears as if Hollywood is trying to figure out who to please.  We’ve got a horror, a musical, a drama, and a comedy.  Will any of them take over the top spot from Planet of the Apes?  We’ll soon find out.

Final Destination 5 is the latest, and reportedly last, installment of the horror franchise that finds several people cheating death only to find death stalking them.  This series got boring after 2nd movie, but the producers are claiming that they hired new blood to give the franchise fresh life.  The 3D aspect could definitely help, but let’s hope that this really is it.

With Glee as popular as ever, the time seems ripe for a Glee movie.  Glee: The 3D Concert Movie however follows the live concert tour from earlier this summer and is not an addition to the TV series.  More than likely this documentary will only be something the biggest of fans would want to see.

The Help is an adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s first novel about a young writer who returns home after college and befriends the African American maids her family have hired.  This of course leads her to writing a book about the struggles of the hired help.  This drama stars Emma Stone, Bryce Dallas Howard and Viola Davis.

And last but not least is the latest comedy from the director of Zombieland, 30 Minutes or Less.  Jesse Eisenberg stars as a pizza delivery guy who is kidnapped and has a bomb strapped to his chest by a couple of criminals.  He’s told he has to rob a bank within a few hours or they will blow him up.  The movie sounds kind of dumb, and with the number of comedies that have bombed this year this one is probably about to be added to the pile.
