Movies Opening May 6th, 2011

ThorThe summer blockbuster season is upon us, and if last week’s 86 million dollar haul is any indication, this weekend should be a blast.  Opening this week is the first of many comic book inspired movies, a new chick flick and Mel Gibson’s return to the screen.

Ever since the X-Men became a huge hit, movie studios have been scrambling to find any comic book to turn into the next big thing.  Thor may not be a household name when it comes to superheroes, but he could end up becoming one if his new movie is a hit.  Kenneth Branagh directs the Norse God of Thunder (played by Chris Hemsworth) in his first big screen adaptation.  It is hard to say how this movie will do, but it does look decent and has a star studded cast that includes Anthony Hopkins and Natalie Portman.

Something Borrowed is a typical chick flick, with the story revolving around a girl falling for her best friend’s fiancée.  It looks like a typical movie of the genre, and if one were take a guess on the outcome without even having seen the movie they’d probably be right.  Still, they can be fun to watch at times.  Kate Hudson and Ginnifer Goodwin star in this one.

And finally comes the long awaited Jodie Foster movie The Beaver.  Mel Gibson stars as a man whose life has fallen apart, and ends up adopting a puppet of a beaver as his only means of communicating with friends and family.  This movie looks more like a TV movie of the week than a big screen production, but it’s gotten some respectable reviews from critics.  It’ll disappear quickly however, so if you want to catch it you’d better act fast.
