Movies Opening May 20th, 2011
Only two new movies open this weekend, one of which is a sure fire blockbuster. Of course the blockbuster is the sequel to a very popular series, and the other a limited release of a new Woody Allen flick. There’s no doubt on anyone’s mind which will take the top spot this weekend.
It’s been four years since the last Pirates of the Caribbean movie sailed onto screens, and demand for a new one couldn’t be higher. On Stranger Tides opens and no matter what critics write about it, it’s sure to be a hit. Johnny Depp returns as Captain Jack Sparrow, as does Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa. Everything else has changed however, including the director. This time around the duo embark on a quest to find the fountain of youth, and run afoul of Blackbeard and his daughter who are seeking the same thing. Plans for a fifth movie are all ready in the works, but this movie is apparently a self contained story. Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane join the cast this time around.
Midnight in Paris is the latest from writer/director Woody Allen. Owen Wilson plays a writer who retreats from his fiancée and her parents when they journey to Paris, and he finds himself traveling the streets on a grand adventure that has him running into historic, artistic figures. Rachel McAdams and Kathy Bates co-star in this romantic comedy.
