Summer’s Most Anticipated Movies
Next weekend marks the beginning of the blockbuster season, with Thor, a Pirates of the Caribbean sequel, and Hangover 2 coming out one after another throughout the month. The really hot season typically doesn’t begin until June however when the cream of the crop arrive. Here are the top movies due to come out during the summer.
Super 8 (June 10th) – This movie is a collaboration between J.J. Abrams and Steven Spielberg, and because of their names attached to the project has hit written all over it. Not a lot is known about this movie however, other than it takes place in 1979, has something to do with a top secret train that is mysteriously derailed, and a town that has strange disappearances in it.
Green Lantern (June 17th) – This is truly the summer of the superhero, and if this one does good we may see many more lesser known heroes get movies of their own. It stars Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, a test pilot who receives a powerful ring that he can use to save the world. Blake Lively stars as Carol Ferris, his love interest in the flick.
Transfomers: Dark Side of the Moon (July 1st) – Yes Michael Bay returned to make yet another Transformers movie, and no Megan Fox isn’t returning. The movie is schedules for the biggest long weekend of the summer, and will undoubtedly have a great opening, but beyond that who knows. It has to be better than the last movie in the series was, and if it’s not, this will likely spell the end of any further sequels.
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 ( July 15th) – This will be the biggest movie of the summer, hands down. Not only does it mark the final movie of the Harry Potter series, but by all accounts it should be action packed with wizard duels and more character deaths.
Captain America: The First Avenger (July 22nd) – Yes, it’s yet another comic book movie, but this one is different. It takes place during World War 2, and gives us the origin story of one of the greatest heroes of all time. The movie doesn’t look like it’s going to inundate us with special effects, nor does it seem to infuse too much humor into the storyline. This could be one of the better made movies this year.
Cowboys and Aliens (July 29th) – Ok, this ones seems silly, but it does look interesting. Apache Indians and western settlers much set aside their differences to deal with an alien invasion. It is based on a comic book, but it’s not a superhero flick. This one could either be really good, or really bad. If it’s the latter Harrison Ford may just want to retire instead of continuing his streak of terrible movies. If it’s good his stock may rise.
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (August 5th) – James Franco stars in this origin story of the long running franchise. This movie makes the list simply for curiosities sake. By looking at how often it’s release date has been moved around, this movie could be a disaster waiting to be shown.
