DVD Releases April 5th, 2011
This week there are four movies released on DVD, two of which were decent hits, and two that disappeared quickly. One’s a sequel to a 1980’s movie, one is a comedy sequel to two movies in the 2000’s, and two are based on true stories.
Tron: Legacy is the follow up to the cult favourite 1980’s Disney movie about a man’s journey in a virtual world. This time around Garrett Hedlund takes the lead role as he tries to find his missing father (Jeff Bridges). Olivia Wilde also guest stars. The movie itself did respectable numbers at the box office, and the 3D was pretty cool, but there wasn’t much of a plot.
Little Fockers is the third in the Meet the Parents series, and once more the entire gang is here. Ben Stiller, Robert DeNiro, Owen Wilson, and the rest of the Focker and Byrnes families are here. The movie had a respectful run at the box office, but it will probably do even better on DVD.
The first of the true story new releases is Casino Jack. Academy Award winner Kevin Spacey plays Jack Abramoff, the DC lobbyist who got greedy and ended up in prison. The movie was one of those blink and you missed it releases, even though it got fairly decent reviews from critics.
And finally there is the Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor drama I Love You Phillip Morris. The two play lovers who meet in prison, and go about trying to create the perfect life for themselves. This movie was originally screened last summer, but didn’t get its short run at the theater until December. Again, it vanished just as quickly as it appeared.
