Movies Opening February 4th, 2011

The_roomate_Movie_PosterLately we’ve been seeing Hollywood throw everything at us, from horror to comedy to drama, but this week it seems like they decided to stick to the thriller genre.  With the success of The Rite last week it seems like a great choice.  The new options are a based on a true story and produced by James Cameron caving movie, and a straight up horror movie about an obsessed roommate.

There is no denying James Cameron’s popularity, or his ability to choose good movies, but one has to wonder if he’ll be as successful when he’s just producing and not directing.  Sanctum is about a team of divers who discover an unexplored cave system and become trapped after a freak storm seals shut the only exit.  By the sounds of things critics are digging the 3D effects on this one, but that’s about it.

What do you get when you take a common horror story, throw in two popular and beautiful women, and mix with a fairly new Danish director?  You get The Roommate.  Have you ever wondered what it would be like if you suddenly discovered that your new roommate was a psychopath?  You’d probably try to get a new roommate, and run away from her while you still could.  That’s the basic plot of the movie, which will probably do well during it’s first week of release thanks to Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly fans, and then vanish until it’s available for rent.
