Oscar Nominations Announced
The 83rd annual Academy Awards are set to take place on Sunday February 27th, and this morning the nominations were announced. Those nominated were selected by the 5755 voting members of the Academy of Motion Arts and Pictures. There were a few surprises, but after the Golden Globes there are clear favorites to win in each of the categories. This year the King’s Speech leads the way with 12 nominations.
The Best Actor Category is an interesting mix of veteran and young actors. Javier Bardem was nominated for Biutiful, and becomes the first actor nominated without speaking a single line of English in the movie. Last year’s winner Jeff Bridges was nominated for True Grit, while Colin Firth, the actor everyone thought would win last year and didn’t, returns to the category for a rematch for his work in The King’s Speech. Jesse Eisenberg of The Social Network and co-host of this years show James Franco of 127 Hours round out the nominees.
The Best Actress Category is also an interesting mix of talent. You’ve got one previous winner, Nicole Kidman for Rabbit Hole, three previous nominees, Annette Bening for The Kids Are All Right, Natalie Portman for Black Swan and Michelle Williams for Blue Valentine, and you’ve got one newcomer, Jennifer Lawrence for Winter’s Bone.
The Best Supporting Actor nominees are Christian Bale in The Fighter, John Hawkes in Winter’s Bone, Jeremy Renner in The Town, Mark Ruffalo in The Kids Are All Right, and Geoffrey Rush in The King’s Speech. For Best Supporting Actress you’ve got Amy Adams in The Fighter, Helena Bonham Carter in The King’s Speech, Melissa Leo in The Fighter, Hailee Steinfeld in True Grit, and Jacki Weaver in Animal Kingdom.
The other big category is of course Best Picture. Once again this year ten pictures have been nominated. Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The Kids Are All Right, The King’s Speech, 127 Hours, The Social Network, Toy Story 3, True Grit, and Winter’s Bone.
