Movies Opening October 8th, 2010

lifeasweknowitThe big question this week is will any of the new releases be able to take the top spot from last week’s The Social Network.  It seems like a pretty tough task as word of mouth is spreading about it, and nothing with a lot of buzz is being released this weekend.  We’ve got a new romantic comedy with Katherine Heigl, a true story about a race horse, a new horror movie from one of the genre’s masters, and a thriller starring Edward Norton.

Life As We Know It is about two single adults who are suddenly forced into becoming the caregivers of their best friends’ child.  Katherine Heigl (The Ugly Truth, Killers) is the big star here, and one has to wonder what will become of her big screen career if she scores another flop.  The lone theatrical hit for the former Grey’s Anatomy star is Knocked Up, and that was three long years ago.

The latest movie from Disney isn’t animated, but instead a live action movie about the life of Penny Chenery, the owner of Secretariat, one of the most famous racehorses of all time.  The movie is loaded with stars, including Diane Lane, John Malkovich, Scott Glenn, and James Cromwell.  There hasn’t been a lot of promotion of this biopic, but it’s attracting a bit of attention, and receiving decent reviews from critics.  Whether those decent reviews score with the audience is another matter altogether.

Wes Craven is back doing what he is known for, directing horror movies.  After taking 4 years off after this last movie (Paris, I Love You), and five years off since his last horror movie (Red Eye), Wes Craven brings us My Soul To Take, a movie about a slasher returning to kill seven teenagers whose birthdays are on the same day of his supposed death.

And finally this week sees the release of Stone.  This movie stars Edward Norton as a convicted arsonist who uses his wife (Milla Jovovich) to seduce the parole officer (Robert DeNiro) to help him escape from prison.  The previews don’t make this movie look very good, and it will probably end up in the cheap bin at Blockbuster before too long.
