Also known as a cooking plantain, the exotic fruit plantain is a menu staple in locations like Southeast Asia, West and Central Africa, Central America and the Caribbean. Although plantains are a common sight on the dinner table in these regions (and have also become produce aisle staples here in North America), the humble plantain may also be a skincare and health breakthrough.<\/p>\n

This fruit hails from the same family as the banana, and is packed with the benefits of Vitamins A and C. While Vitamin A plays a role in the growth of skin cells and skin health, Vitamin C is also an antioxidant which can encourage healthy, rejuvenated skin. As well, this vitamin can help to counteract the effects of free radical damage to the skin.<\/p>\n

According to Dr. Axe<\/a>, one cup of raw plantain contains 27.2 milligrams of Vitamin C and 33 per cent of the daily value of Vitamin A.<\/p>\n

Like its close cousin the banana, plantain is also a solid source of potassium (a mineral which is essential for functioning muscles, metabolism and nervous system). Meanwhile, the high fibre content of plantain is said to assist with a balanced digestive system and the Vitamin B6 content can promote brain health.<\/p>\n

If you\u2019re looking for a powerful new fruit to add to your diet, it may be worth a try to stock up on plantains. After all, the idea of a strengthened body, balanced digestion and enviable skin is certainly a refreshing thought.<\/p>\n
