The Worst, High Calorie Halloween Candy – What To Avoid
While most of us love a little Halloween candy, it’s no secret that most of it is high in sugar, fat and calories. The question is, just how ‘bad’ can a ‘little bit’ of Halloween candy be? In preparation for the weekend, we’re taking a closer look at some of the most popular Halloween candy (and our personal favourites!) to determine which ones we want to (maybe) avoid or at least indulge in a little less!
Candy Corn – Made primarily from sugar, corn syrup, confectioner’s wax, salt and artificial coloring, candy corn isn’t low calorie or something you should indulge in regularly. A standard serving size of 19 pieces contains 140 calories, 28 grams of sugar and 70 milligrams of sodium.
3 Musketeers – A favourite around Halloween, even the mini bars are surprisingly high in calories. One standard bar contains 240 calories, 36 grams of sugar and 5 grams of saturated fat.
Snickers – Available everywhere around Halloween, Snickers bars (in particular, the mini snickers) are small in size, but pack a significant amount of fat and calories. A serving size (36g) contains 170 calories, 8 grams of fat, 80 miligrams of sodium and 18 grams of sugar.
Twix – Marketed as a creamy, crispy cookie bar, Twix are commonly given out at Halloween. The mini or fun-size Twix contain a significant amount of calories and sugar. The fun-size pack contains 250 calories, 14 grams of fat (6 grams saturated) along with 17 grams of sugar.
Sour Patch Kids – Regardless of what flavor you pick, Sour Patch Kids are notoriously high in sugar. A serving of Sour Patch Kids Berries contains 150 calories and 57 grams of sugar.
Twizzlers – Many people look at Twizzlers as a healthy alternative to chocolate, but that’s not necessarily the case. Four Twizzler pieces contain 160 calories, 95 grams of sodium and 19 grams of sugar.
Butterfinger: The mini pack (containing 4 pieces) is popular around Halloween, but packs a punch with 180 calories, 8 grams fat and 18 grams sugar.
