Are Figs The Next Breakthrough Beauty Ingredient?

As exotic fruit that are native to the Middle East and to the Mediterranean, figs are a common menu staple in countries like Turkey and Greece. In fact, they’ve gained a reputation for treating liver and respiratory illnesses, along with promoting balanced digestion. However, the humble fig may also be the next breakthrough ingredient to add to your beauty regime!

Figs are packed with phenols, powerful flavonoids (or antioxidants) that can have an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin. According to a 2005 study published in the Journal of the American College of Nutrition, figs also offer an antioxidant boost once they are consumed. As a strong source of phenol antioxidants, these nutrient-rich superfruits just may play a role in an anti-aging and skin-friendly diet.

Figs also have a high water content and are a source of Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids, which can help to nourish a dry complexion. For anyone who struggles with skin conditions like eczema, this superfruit can help to clarify the skin and add a healthy glow.

With their high calcium content, fig extract is also now being used as a topical treatment and in hair care products to encourage longer and stronger strands. For beauty lovers who suffer from dehydrated or distressed strands, a fig conditioner may be able to soothe tangled tresses.

If you’re planning to try a new beauty ingredient to add moisture to your limp locks or dehydrated visage, fig-based products or remedies may be worth a try this season.
