Pan Am 2015 Athlete Phylicia George’s Top Fitness and Beauty Secrets

With the 2015 Pan American Games officially in session in Toronto, Canadian track and field athlete Phylicia George is set to compete on July 21. The 27-year-old Torontonian may be known for her natural athleticism on the track, but her toned, trim physique comes with hard work! Real Style caught up with George about her gruelling fitness regimen, best skincare secrets and favourite beauty products to achieve a flawless makeup look.

Real Style: Other than track, how else do you like to keep active and fit?

Phylicia: I train five days a week. When I’m not, I have active recovery on Saturdays and Sundays. In my off season, I do yoga or go for a walk. I’ve been getting into this really great Nike N+TC app, and I think it’s a really great opportunity if you’re on the go or in a hotel. I’ve kind of fallen in love with it, and really only in off season. It’s actually geared toward women. It will bring in actual athletes and help with mimicking an athletic workout, but in a shorter amount of time.

Real Style: Describe your typical workout routine during training season.

Phylicia: A lot of the stuff that we do when we’re in season is low body, but very high intensity. Really high intensity, really short bursts of energy and then a lot of rest in between. The sprinting is usually high intensity. I might go to the track and I’ll grab a hurdle workout. I might do over one hurdle, and then do a few over two and a few over three. Then, maybe we’ll do over eight hurdles a few times. If I have a spring workout, I might do one for 20, 30 or 40 metres. We have a set number that we’re working with. With sprinters, we have to really make sure that our bodies are ready. There’s a lot of energy, and it’s very easy to get injured. I’ll usually warm up for an hour, and my workout usually takes about two hours on the track. Then, I’ll usually go into the weight room for about an hour after that.

Real Style: Do you have any tips for sticking to a fitness regimen and staying motivated?

Phylicia: The biggest thing for me is setting goals and keeping myself accountable. Not just setting one big goal that seems unattainable. You set your big picture goal, but also setting smaller, more achievable goals that help you get there. For a regular person, having someone to train with is huge. I have a training partner, and I know on the days that I’m tired and I don’t really feel like doing a workout, having my training partner there to say “Hey Phylicia, can you do this?” is really more meaningful. I would also encourage people to have somebody to hold you accountable.

Real Style: How do you keep up a healthy, balanced diet while training?

Phylicia: Because I’m at the track for so long, it’s very easy to not get enough calories. On running days, I bring snacks to the track and taking in liquid calories especially while I’m training. I’ll always be sipping on Gatorade or a recovery drink, something that has some glucose in it. That way, I’m getting hydration while I’m training, to make sure that I’m keeping my blood sugar levels at a high level. Or, I’ll bring crisp bars, granola bars, something that’s easy for me to digest while I’m working out. You don’t want anything super heavy- but bananas, apples, grapes, those kinds of things. I always make sure to get protein at least a half hour after I’m done working out. I might actually bring in chicken breast on a salad, or I might have a protein shake.

Real Style: What are your best skincare secrets for keeping your skin moisturized and hydrated?

Phylicia: I just make sure to wash my face as soon as I’m done working out. I actually have a bit of a faux pas- I don’t train with makeup on, but I compete with makeup on!

Real Style: What are your five favourite beauty products?

Phylicia: I have so many! I don’t go anywhere without concealer on. Right now, I use MAC Pro Concealer. I have to have my beautyblender. I love lipstick, so lipstick in a variety of shades. It’s usually a MAC lipstick as my go-to. I will not leave the house without mascara, either. Right now, I’m using Too Faced Better Than False Lashes Extreme. I like a good glow, so I use BareMinerals All-Over Face Color in Warmth or Park Avenue Princess bronzer [by Tarte]. I love that glowy, fresh out of the Caribbean kind of look.
