Real Style: What are some of the top makeup trends for summer 2014 and how are they different?
Kim Bower: This season I find myself playing with the graphic eye the most. The “no makeup look” is something I’ve always liked to lean towards as well. The fun thing about a graphic eye is that it can be rather extreme and lean towards the 60s and still look very modern. In the evening its fun to do a flick for both top and bottom lids. If you are going to really play with this trend and draw a sharp line in the crease or create a very extreme look, do it at night and not at the office. There are a spate of fabulous new products that help you get this look right now that are so easy to use and are very long lasting. Right now I’m loving Charlotte Tilburys feline flick pen (out in the Fall) as well as Makeup Forever’s water resistant black gel liner.
Real Style: What are your go to summer makeup products and why? (long lasting, won’t clog pores, has spf, etc…)
Kim: During summer I love to use a smudge resistant makeup for my clients who are heading out for a long day of shooting or on hot summer evenings. I think Lancome has a beautiful smudge resistant base Teint Idole Ultra 24 Hour. I like to apply these with a concealer brush heavier in the areas that need it and buff the rest of it out sheerly with a fluffy nylon foundation buffer. On my clients who are drier and tend to like a dewier look I stick with Clarins beauty flash balm mixed with Jouer luminizing moisture tint or Chanel vita lumiere Aqua which are dewy and sheer but can be layered and built for more coverage, Super restorative tinted cream spf 20 by Clarins is also a favorite all in one solution. I also always use Tarte gel blush under everyones powdered blush or bronzer. It creates a gorgeous non greasy flush that lasts all day. I use this on the lips quite often as well. My favorite color is Tickled.
Real Style: What do you think of the new ‘no makeup look’? What’s the best way to achieve it, while still hiding all the flaws?
Kim: I love the “no makeup look” not everyone is best flattered by it but you can play up one feature lightly if you must. The key is a really fresh looking skin. Start with a concealer brush and cover the areas of redness in your skin or any pimples with a concealer or your favorite full cover base and then very sheerly press your base mixed with a drop of moisturizer on your skin rolling gently with a damp beauty blender sponge. Steer clear of any shimmer and use Smiths Rose lip balm on your lips and lids. Finish with a swipe of water resistant mascara
Real Style: What are the five most important makeup and beauty products all women should have in their makeup bag for the summer?
Kim: The 5 most important makeup and beauty products for summer are…….
a light moisturizer with an spf and a tint I like the super restorative tinted cream by Clarins. A water resistant eye liner for every day I like Urban decay 24/7 black velvet. A good gel or cream blush I like Tarte Tickled or Makeup Forever hd cream blushes for see through blendability. A good mascara that is water resistant, thickening and lengthening like Chanel volume or Armani Lash to kill.
Lastly a nice tinted sheer lip color in a few different shades from a couple trendy colors (like orange) to a beautiful bitten rose colored lip I love the lip sergeant lip tints by Tarte which are moisturizing and sheer and can be either matte or dewy in finish.
Real Style: What would you call your personal signature look?
Kim: My makeup style has a strong emphasis on the natural beauty I find in the skin and the colors I find naturally occurring in each person. For summer I like more of a watercolor, blended and barely there finish.
