How To Apply A Self Tanner Like A Pro

sunblock and legs

As summer gets closer, we dream of putting on our warm weather clothes and hitting the park , the beach or just about anywhere where we can catch some rays. Only fear? Revealing our pasty legs in those short shorts! This is where a good self tanner and more importantly, knowing how to apply one for an overall even finish, comes in handy. Follow our  6 step process for a full proof guide to revealing your gorgeous bronze godess self.

1. Exfoliate

This is the most important step for a non-streaky tan. The colour creating chemical in your self tanner, DHA, is sucked up by the extra proteins in your dry, dead skin. This causes discoloration and leaves you with streaks. To avoid this, make sure to exfoliate a few days before you plan on applying your self tanner. Use  a loofah sponge.

2. Moisturize

To ensure that there’s no dry patches, moisturize your skin directly after a shower. Areas such as your knees, ankles and elbows need a little extra as they’re prone to streaking the most.

3. Do not apply self tanner in your steamy bathroom

You might save time by doing all these steps at once, but we can guarantee you’ll end up with a streaky tan if you do. Let your moisturizer soak in while you wait for your bathroom to cool down. The heat and steam from a shower will cause your self tanner to run just as quickly as you apply it.

4. Pick a self tanner that’s right for you

We suggest using a gel self tanner as they are light and absorb into skin quickly. Be sure to pick a self tanner that suits your current skin colour. You don’t want to go too dark, too fast as it will look very unnatural and, of course, streaky. Try a self tanner which gradually darkens the skin with each application.

5. Apply self tanner in swift circular motions

Use a buffing motion instead of straight lines for a no streak glow. Quick, circular motions helps the self tanner blend easier and avoids that zebra pattern faux pas.

6. Let it dry

No matter how fast the bottle says it dries, wait longer. You really need to give yourself at least two hours before you can safely put on clothes without the risk of staining. It’s best to apply your self tanner at night, let it dry and then sleep on it. When you wake up in the morning, you’ll be ready to go with radiant, glowing skin.

Don’t forget to wash your hands before and after each application. These tips should be used if applying to your face as well.
