Expert Skin Care Advice From Dr. Solish

We all have different skin types and it’s hard to know what products are best for you. Instead of guessing, we turned to our skin care expert Dr. Solish to find out what the key products are for our delicate skin, no matter what your problem is.

Q: What can you recommend for skin that’s peeling and dehydrated?

A: If your skin is peeling or dehydrated you need to moisturizer it and correct the natural skin barrier.  This is accomplished by using soapless, richer moisturizers and decreasing the use of agents that dry the skin like glycolic acid or Retin-A.  If that doesn’t work you can use a humectant, these are stronger creams, but can sting a bit when you first use them. They have things like lactic acid or urea in them.  Examples are lachydrin or uremol.  If it persists see your doctor or dermatologist.

Q: What can you recommend for oily skin prone to breakouts?

A: If you are oily, then you need to use oil free products.  Most people who are very oily don’t even need moisturizers, so don’t use any unnecessary creams.  If it persists see your doctor. There are a lot of over the counter and prescription creams that can help. Typically they contain things like benzoyl peroxide, vitamin A and antibiotics.
