Q: I have sun damage/spots from many years spent lying in the sun during my youth. What is the best treatment for removing or minimizing sun spots?
A) First of all, those spots should be checked to make sure they are benign, or not dangerous, or other forms of pigmentation like melasma. If they are just brown spots from the sun, then there are some options available in treating them. If it is excess pigment like that seen in melasma, some skin bleaching creams may help. If they are more like freckles or what we refer to as Lentigines, than liquid nitrogen or lasers can be helpful. Your doctor will assess the spots and if there are just a few, may decide with you to try liquid nitrogen. This will injure the skin and cause a small scab to form. As the scab falls off it will often remove some of the pigment, or unwanted colour. There are a few lasers that also do this. The most common one is IPL or Intense Pulsed Light. This light devise will allow the pigmented spots to absorb the energy and destroy some of the unwanted pigment in the skin. Usually this requires multiple treatments and can result in more evenly coloured skin.
