The Canadian Screen Awards turn ve on March 12th, and once again there is plenty of Canadian talent to celebrate. In 2016 it was all about Room, Schitt’s Creek and Orphan
Black and this year the latter two are returning for even more accolades. Orphan Black and Schitt’s Creek lead the nominations with 14 and 13 respectively, with the upstart CBC series kim’s Convenience not far behind with 11. On the lm side of things, it’s Xavier Dolan’s dysfunctional family drama It’s Only The End of the World leading the way with nine nominations, and the sports biopic Race, based on the true story of track star Jesse Owens’ performance at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, right behind with eight.
The Tatiana Maslany-led series Orphan Black has been a mainstay at the CSAs for the show’s rst four years. It took some time for
the American Emmy Awards to nally give Maslany her due for her role(s) on the show, but she’s won the Best Performance by an Actress in a Continuing Leading Dramatic Role the last three years in a row
at the CSAs. The series is currently heading into its fth and nal season, and looks set to win most of the awards it was nominated for this year. Maslany should have no problem repeating as Best Actress, even though she faces stiff competition from Motive’s Kristin Lehman, Saving Hope’s Erica Durance and Reign’s Megan Follows. Maslany is also nominated for Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role on the movie side of things for her role as a woman struggling with bipolar disorder in The Other Half.
On the comedy side of things, Schitt’s Creek was at the top of its game last year, winning several of the top Comedy awards at the CSAs. This year, however, the series is facing some stiff competition from the new CBC comedy kim’s Convenience. The two series will go head to head in several categories, including Best Comedy Series, Best Direction in a Comedy series, as well as in the Best Actor and Actress categories.
Wunderkind director Xavier Dolan is another familiar face on the CSA red carpet, and this year he’s bringing along his lm It’s Only The End of the World. The lm stars Nathalie Baye, Vincent Cassel, Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux and Gaspard Ulliel, and is about a terminally
ill writer who returns home to tell his family he is dying. The tearjerker is the complete opposite of the inspiring biopic Race, its main competition. Race stars Stephan James as Olympic hero Jesse Owens, whose quest to become the greatest track and eld athlete in history takes him to Berlin in 1936 where he faces the racism of Adolf Hitler’s Aryan race. While they aren’t the only lms in the running, they are by far the most talked about.
Toronto native Howie Mandel will be hosting the live broadcast gala on March 12th. The actor started his career as a stand-up comic before moving on to movies like Walk Like a Man and the TV series St. Elsewhere. The 61-year-old is best known, however, for his role as host of the NBC game show Deal or No Deal.
The Canadian Screen Awards take place in Toronto on March 12, 2017, and will be broadcast live on CBC-TV.
