While the calendar may indicate that Spring 2017 is upon us, it seems the sartorial world can’t turn
its head away from the recent past. Notorious for taking inspiration from decades of yore, fashion seems more than ever steeped in history. This time, however, it’s the 1990s that are back, in all their edgy, brooding glory. While previous interpretations of ’90s fashion may have called on the era’s penchant for plaid and Doc Martens, this season’s take is decidedly less gloomy. From motocross to colour blocking to playful accessories, this season, expect the ’90s to be elevated from passé to très chic.
Biker babes especially will nd inspiration in the revamped motocross trend, which has resurfaced in a subtler form. Instead of Versace’s early ’90s stud-happy leather motorcycle jackets, Spring 2017’s version focuses on racing stripes in rainbow hues. From black, red and white colour blocks at Proenza Schouler to Sonia Rykiel’s asymmetrical stripes in funky primary shades, the trend is a new twist on an old school favourite. Styles ranged from crop tops paired with athleisure-inspired pants, as seen at Fendi, to stark black and white stripes at Louis Vuitton. While it may appear overly striking, this trend is a matter of proportion. A bold top can be paired with solid trousers for a subtler juxtaposition.
If striped pants aren’t for you, there’s another way to test out the trend. Graphic purses were all the rage on many designer runways— vibrant black and magenta geometric detail at Gucci, rainbow fringe clutches at Emilio Pucci. As a fresh take on motocross, colour blocked leather handbags are a cautious way to try out a famously rebellious trend.
