Known for their elaborate Canadian couture creations, Toronto-based designer Stephan Caras and his son Kyriako are a dynamic duo. Real Style spoke to the two designers about their creative inspiration, love of feminine silhouettes and more.
Real Style: what inSpiReS youR cReationS? KyRiaKo caRaS: Going back to our philosophy of design, it’s always how to create something that is feminine and timeless, a little bit of drama. It’s something that a self-assured, con dent woman can wear. That inner beauty is what is inspiring us. In terms of the gowns we create, we start with an idea, we feel for chemistry between col- ours and texture. We nd something that we are drawn to, and we don’t limit ourselves to that. We kind of play with it and let our im- aginations take us down that path. It’s a colour/
texture balance and femininity, whatever we feel
can really make an impact out there.
RS: what aRe youR favouRite Run-
way tRendS foR fall/winteR 2017?
Stephan caRaS: We never follow trends.
We just feel colour and fabric, which we choose
every season. There are different fabrics, and we
express our creativity through those fabrics and
femininity through new fabric every time. That’s
how we feel about women—timeless, beauty.
I don’t believe that a woman should purchase
something and three months later it’s redundant.
RS: which mateRialS aRe you cuRRently in love with?
Kc: For Spring 2018, there are a lot of orals and lace, and different applications and interpretations of that. It’s very ethereal and very dramatic, but still very soft and wearable.
RS: with thiS yeaR maRKing canada’S 150th, what aRe youR beSt faShion memoRieS aS canadian deSigneRS?
Kc: With productions like Toronto Women’s Fashion Week, we were actually able to come back, and be excited about showing in our hometown. Being involved over the past decade here, the shows have really been a wonderful memory. We’ve been able to showcase a lot of our things here in Canada and bring a lot of people together with our clothes.
