CanaDian aCtor allan hawCo may be best known for playing Douglas Brown on the ad- venture series Frontier and private investigator Jake Doyle on Republic of Doyle, but the 40-year-old ac- tor is back in the spotlight with a new role. this time around, hawco takes to the screen as David slaney on the CBC miniseries Caught, which wraps up this spring.
from Cornwall, England, where he is currently film- ing the next season of Frontier.
although hawco himself might be based in st. John’s, newfoundland, his new adventure on Caught is set in a variety of exotic locales in the 1970s. From Mexico to Colombia to Montreal, the Caught story takes place just about everywhere. hawco may be the boy next door from the Maritimes, but his new character is 100 percent bad boy and the complete opposite. hot in the centre of adventure, hawco’s David is a hardened drug dealer who is serving time in prison. we caught up with the seasoned actor to ask him about his latest role.
so, how does this latest experience compare to playing a scottish fur trader on Frontier, which is set in Canada in the 1700s? “they are dramatically different. the gap between those two guys is epic, and quite enjoyable for me,” Hawco says emphati- cally. “Douglas is just trying to keep his head above water. i guess there are similarities in David and Douglas’ moral core, but Douglas lives in a world where he is reactive.”
“David is one of the most layered characters i have ever played. His ambition is selfless and his drive is infinite. He requires a great deal of focus and energy. i think he’s my favourite character that i have ever played,” hawco tells us, on the phone
“he came to us on Frontier before the rest of the world knew that. he knew it was coming, he hasn’t changed. he’s a lovely fellow. he works really hard and he wants the show to be the best possible ver- sion of itself,” hawco enthuses.

Perhaps befitting his reputation as a down-to- earth Maritimer, hawco is just as passionate about stealing the screen as he is about sharing it. on Frontier, hawco co-stars with Jason Momoa, whom he describes as “a massive movie star.”
other than his acting credits, hawco is also the writer and executive producer behind both Caught and Republic of Doyle. his local production compa-
