2012 was one of the most exciting years we’ve had in fashion yet. From Gwyneth and Angelina’s white and black looks, respectively, at the Oscars to new rising fashion icons like Emma Stone and Rooney Mara, our favourite stars did not disappoint whether they were making red carpet appearances or just being photographed by the paparazzi on a day off. Is was hard to narrow done our list, but we still managed to do it, despite a few office-wide disagreements. Here are our top 10 best dressed stars of 2012.
It doesn’t hurt that Gwyneth Paltrow is best friends with Stella McCartney as a best friend or that Tom Ford loves to dress the Oscar-winning star. Sure, she’s got a lot of people that cringe at the thought of Gwynnie’s near perfect reputation, but she might just be the closest thing Americans have to a modern day Grace Kelly. Our favourite outfit of Gwyneth’s this year was hands-down her white dress and cape by Tom Ford that she wore to the Oscars.
Emma Stone’s red carpet tour for The Amazing Spider-Man turned into one of the biggest fashion spectacles of the year. Whether she was opting for a softer look or going full vamp like in this black Gucci dress above, she killed it everywhere she went.
No wonder Karl Lagerfeld adores her! Blake Lively made head turns at the Chanel Bijoux De Diamant 80th Anniversary bash in New York wearing a backless silver gown by Chanel Couture with pockets in the front. Blake came into her own in fashion this year, even outshining her Upper East Side character from Gossip Girl, Serena van der Woodsen.
No matter where she went, from the Olympics in London to her tour of Southeast Asia with Prince William, the world was watching Kate Middleton this year to see what she would wear next. Always conscious of wearing designers from the countries she’s visiting and also maintaining a level of sophistication uncommon to women her age, Kate has ushered in a new era of young women who are true classics. She manages to show off her stunning figure, like in this white and black dress by Alice by Temperley or in the royal blue skinny jeans she wore during the Olympic torch ceremony, while still being a lady. Now with a baby on the way, we can’t wait to see what maternity trends Kate sets in 2013.
If we could give out an award for “Most Improved Style,” it would be to Kristen Stewart. Although she’s known for her tomboy style, Kristen upped her game this fall for her red carpet appearances for On the Road and The Twilight Saga’s Breaking Dawn – Part 2. Maybe her affair with Rupert Sanders and the media escapade that followed made Kristen realize that she may as well just embrace her sexiness and make no apologies for it. No look was as memorable as her return to the red carpet after the scandal for the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of On the Road. Kristen showed off serious skin in this Zuhair Murad black dress with floral accents and lots of revealing sheer.
We couldn’t think of anyone better to be the face of the French fashion house, Christian Dior. The Oscar-winning actress is a classic beauty and is a reminder that real movie stars of really do still exist. It’s very rare that we see her in anything other than Dior, but if you were the face of the iconic fashion house, would you really wear anything else?
Australian supermodel Miranda Kerr might have the curves to rule the runway at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, but we love her best when she’s hailing cabs and making her way through the streets of New York in her amazing everyday clothes. She’s a master of mixing brands and styles, and making street wear labels household names over night after paparazzi photos of her get published.
As the face of Donna Karan, Ashley Greene has not only made a name for the American label with the under-30 demographic, she’s also go a designer hookup whenever she hits a red carpet. Kristen Stewart may have wowed us with her daring sexy style during the red carpet events for the final film in the Twilight series, but Ashley blew us away with her Old Hollywood look. Our favourite Ashley Greene look of the year had to be this Donna Karan Atelier dress in midnight blue at the New York premiere of Breaking Dawn: Part 2.
Diane Kruger has the kind of ability to mix unlikely pieces together that you’d expect from a fashion world veteran like Kate Moss. This summer, she attended the Chanel Haute Couture show wearing a light blue dress from the Cruise 2013 Versailles collection paired with studded grey flats and a newsboy cap. Not everyone could pull it off, but this former model owns everything she wears.
No one epitomizes Calfornia girl casual quite like Jessica Alba. We love the way she looks like she put very little thought into her day-to-day outfits, and yet she always makes us quickly Google search whatever it is she happens to be wearing. Sure, she has the perfect body to make even an unflattering pair of slouchy jeans look like the next biggest trend in denim wear, but as it turns out, boyfriend jeans really did take off in 2012, so hats off to you, Jess!
