Black Friday has been quite the shopping extravaganza across the border for a number of years, with its stories of fistfights over discounted blenders, scores of crowds lining up before the crack of dawn, and storied 80 per cent off deals. However, us Canucks are fairly new to the Black Friday game and many Canadians are just beginning to stay on home turf over the American Thanksgiving weekend, instead of heading south for sales.
With the holiday season officially here, malls across the country are gearing up for what’s anticipate to be a major retail day. If you’re planning to hit the shops this Friday, here is a list of what major shopping centres have in “store” for you:
Vaughan Mills- The sprawling shopping complex just outside the city is preparing for the crowds in style, with shuttle bus service (two buses in the morning and one in the afternoon) throughout the day from Union Station. The Holt Renfrew Last Call outlet promises some amazing bargains with up to 80 per cent off.
Eaton Centre- Opening at 6 a.m. to accommodate downtown shoppers, you may want to arrive early- the first 100 customers will receive a $10 mall gift card. Look for sales at Aldo, Banana Republic, and one-day events at the Bay. Old Navy also features its much anticipated “Cheermageddon” sale, with doorcrashers on clothing for the whole family.
Scarborough Town Centre- With deals at many of its store, STC promises guests a $10 gift card for every $100 mall gift card purchase. Major retailers such as Sears (great deals on Samsung electronics) are all participating.
Yorkdale Shopping Centre- It’s back- bigger and better than ever before after its recent expansion. With its recent influx of US chains including Ann Taylor, Anthropologie, and The North Face, Yorkdale touches base with its American side this Black Friday. Look for sales at GAP (up to 60 per cent), Laura (30 per cent off dresses), and Crabtree and Evelyn.
Square One: If you feel like beating the rush downtown, head to Mississauga instead, for deals at Bentley Bags (no tax), Buffalo Jeans, M for Mendocino, and 35 per cent off at Capezio.
With Black Friday making its mark in BC, you may want to head to Vancouver for deals on electronics. Best Buy, Futureshop, and Walmart all prepare for a busy day with plenty of bargains to look forward to.
West Edmonton Mall: The country’s largest indoor shopping mall is certainly not one to miss this year, if you’re in the Edmonton area at all (or planning a weekend cross-country road trip). With 30 per cent off your total purchase at 7 for All Mankind, 40 per cent off at aerie, and $50 off your total of $150 or more at Armani Exchange, along with plenty of salon and spa deals, WEM seems like it’ll have a busy Black Friday for sure.
