We all know Hedi Slimane has a thing for rockers. He spent years photographing former Libertines and Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty for his photography book, London Birth of a Cult, back when Slimane was still the Dior Homme fashion designer. After his debut as the designer for Saint Laurent at this past Paris Fashion Week, we knew it was just a matter of time before Slimane brought in his favourite kind of muses to help shape the image of the fashion house.
Enter Tom Burke. With his chisseled facial features and piercing eyes, it’s kind of hard to believe that Tom — the men’s face of Saint Laurent’s spring/summer campaign — hasn’t been a model from the start. Tom, however, is actually the frontman for indie pop band Citizens! Although we’ve heard of self-obsessed North American musicians signing themselves up with modeling agencies in the hopes of being embraced by the fashion industry (just this week Chris Brown decided to sign up with Wilhelmina Men modeling agency — seriously), Tom was discovered by Slimane the old-fashioned way: by a chance encounter.
“Hedi Slimane saw us at Field Day festival [in London's Victoria Park] and we got talking afterwards,” Tom Burke said in an interview with Grazia about his blossoming career as a Saint Laurent model. “He came round to my house where I was living with my girlfriend and took some pictures of us in the front room for his blog. Then a few weeks later he called and asked if I’d like to do a shoot in New York. I’d never been there before so I said yes before I even asked what the shoot was for.”
We love the genuine rock n’ roll edge Tom brings to the Saint Laurent brand. We have a feeling this is just the start of Hedi Slimane’s impressive Saint Laurent campaigns.
