Downton Abbey costume designer Sasannah Buxton, who’s nominated for an Emmy Award tonight for Outstanding Costume, had the task of creating Lady Mary Crawley’s wedding dress for her nuptials during the season 3 opener, which airs in Canada and the USA in January of 2013. Since the season premiere has already aired in the UK, we thought we’d show you a sneak peek of Mary’s wedding dress. Lady Mary is of course marrying her distant relative Matthew Crawley. We’re well into the 1920s when Downton Abbey’s third season begins, and fashionable Mary is of course all over the trends of the time. For her wedding, Lady Mary wears an ivory column dress with a satin sash below the waist and sheer long sleeves, which was at the height of fashion for the time. She tops off her look with a long white veil and a headpiece made to look like a crown of gold leaves and dainty flowers. Lady Mary’s look is definitely reminiscent of Kate Middleton’s Alexander McQueen wedding dress designed by Sarah Burton.

“It’s a truly stunning dress and I’m sure people will make comparisons with the Royal Wedding,” said Lady Mary actress Michelle Dockery. “I felt a bit like Kate with all the security, but we didn’t want people seeing the dress before the big day.”
Although Downton Abbey is currently set in the 1920s, long-sleeve wedding dresses are certainly making a comeback in the current fashion. Not only did Kate Middleton wear long sleeves on her wedding day, Natalie Portman donned a long-sleeve wedding dress by Rodarte. We’re still waiting to see what Blake Lively’s Marchesa wedding dress looks like. Will it be long-sleeved as well? Downton Abbey certainly seems to be making its mark on current trends. We told you all about Downton Abbey’s influence in modern fashion in our post Lady Mary vs Megan Draper: TVs Most Stylish Shows.
