Last Night at the Visa Screening Room at Elgin Theatre in Toronto as part of TIFF 2013, Atom Egoyan’s latest film The Devil’s Knot made its world premiere. The film is the true story of three young children who were killed in Memphis in 1993, and the three teenagers who were falsely accused and convicted of the crime. Several of the stars of the film were in attendance for the event and walked the red carpet, including Stephen Moyer who stopped to chat with us for a moment.
Moyer, who is perhaps best know for playing Vampire Bill in True Blood, told us that he initially “came on board because of Atom. ” He said “there’s not many filmmakers that you get to work with that are purely artists, that are making films that actually mean something. As an actor I can count on one hand the amount of times that happens in your career.”
“I didn’t know too much about the script, to be honest” Moyer said. “I read the script, and was blown away by it.” Moyer followed up by stating that the star studded cast, which also includes Academy Award winners Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth, “have a job to do the best possible justice to the material.”
As a father himself, Moyer said he could relate to the story. ”When we were shooting this my daughter was nine,” he said, “the three boys that got killed were eight. I think 20 years ago it was quite easy for your kid to be able to go out and cycle their bike, certainly when I was little, you could go and cycle your bike around and be fine, we can’t do that now. It’s a different time we live in now, and it’s because of incidents like this.”
Overall Moyer said making the movie was “an incredible experience from start to finish. “
