Get on your mark Canadians, because Amazing Race Canada is set to take you on a journey from coast to coast through all of the pit stops and road blocks this summer. Canadian Olympian Jon Montgomery was announced as the host of Amazing Race Canada which will debut on CTV on July 15. While this choice may be surprising, Executive Producer John Brunton said they wanted to find a host who represented our country.
“We wanted to try to do something different with out host in Canada than what they do on the US program. It was a point of distinction,” Brunton said, “We thought it would be an opportunity to give our show Canadian DNA. Like so many people, I watched the Olympics and watched Jon perform brilliantly and win his gold medal. The story of that was extraordinary and exceptional. I also think the way people behave after they won is really telling. I think that Jon’s moment at the Vancouver Olympics was one of those tremendously unifying historic Canada, angel dust moments.”
Jon Montgomery said that while he has gotten the chance to travel from coast to coast during his childhood and then again during his sports career, seeing how Canadians interacted on the race enforced his love of this country.
“”I already had a profound sense that I was lucky to be Canadian, but doing this show you get to meet other Canadians and see how they interact with the racers. There was this sense of commonality among the people. Certainly none of them were elitist and nobody was rude on the race. Everybody was quite helpful. The racers found out that it was great to be competing in your own country, because people genuinely want to help you. Elsewhere in the world the world they might not be as forthcoming with the help. Definitely what I took away from the show was a further belief that we are lucky to be Canadian. I know that Canadians who watch the show are going to see their country showcased like never before.”
When the show airs, fans of the much-loved reality show don’t need to worry because the game remains the same. Viewers are going to get a uniquely Canadian view on this re-imagining of the show, but it’s our individuality that makes it so different from the American version.
“In terms of the rules of the game, we stayed pretty close to the format. I think that you will find our cast incredibly, distinctively Canadian. The challenges that we selected were really inspired by who we are and where we come from and the places that we went. When you see the show you will say hey this really is the amazing race, but there is Canadian DNA starting with Jon as our host, an incredibly compelling cast that I am so excited about. You can travel through downtown Toronto and experience many cultures blocks away from each other, including language barriers. Canada is a little different than the United States in that I don’t think we are a melting pot. You can come from different parts of the world, celebrate your heritage here and still be Canadian. I think that is something really distinct about who we are.”
