Vanity Fair’s October cover story on Scientology is already causing quite the controversy. In the article “What Katie Didn’t Know: Marriage, Scientology-Style” by Maureen Orth, the author details how Scientology officials were on a mission to find a new love interest for Tom Cruise before he met Katie Holmes. According to the insiders that Orth talked to, Scientology officials set their sights on actress Nazanin Boniadi for Cruise, and the pair dated from November 2004 to January 2005. The articles describes the strange dynamics of her relationship with Cruise, and how she was reprimanded for speaking out of line.
Although Scientology officials have denied the claims, former Scientologist Paul Haggis wrote an email to Showbiz 411 confirming that the auditions did take place. In the mail, Haggis wrote: “I met her through a mutual friend when I was doing my own personal research into the allegations against Scientology, before I wrote my letter of resignation. Naz was embarrassed by her unwitting involvement in this incident and never wanted it to come out, so I kept silent. However I was deeply disturbed by how the highest ranking members of a church could so easily justify using one of their members; how they so callously punished her and then so effectively silenced her when it was done.”
You’ll have to pick up the October issue of Vanity Fair to read the entire story. We have a feeling this article is actually going to get a lot of people interested in seeing the upcoming Scientology satire entitled The Master, starring Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman. No word yet on how Cruise will respond to all the negative attention that Scientology is receiving.
