Anne Hathaway, who’s currently on the red carpets promoting The Dark Knight Rises, is finally comfortable rocking her pixie hair cut. The star, who chopped of her long brown locks to play Fantine in Les Miserables, was mortified the first time she saw herself in the mirror. “I wasn’t expecting it to be such a big deal, because it was my idea,” she confessed to Kelly Ripa on Live! with Kelly. “It was something I’ve wanted to do for a long time, and I knew it was something the character did, so I just offered it… As it got closer, I thought: I can’t really take it back now… I’ve now done back-flips out of windows, I’ve jumped off buildings. And cutting my hair reduced me to, like, mental patient-level crying. I was inconsolable.” We have to give the Oscar-nominated actress credit for always giving her all to her roles, even if it means parting with her enviable thick hair. But she’s in good company. Here are four other actresses who’ve cut off their hair for the sake of a film or TV show.
Natalie Portman in V for Vendetta
Although a lot of actresses have cut of their hair for a role, Natalie Portman is one of the few who actually had her head shaved while the cameras were rolling for V for Vendetta. Not only did she have to deal with the shock of losing all her hair at once, she also only had one take to get the scene exactly right. Of the experience of shaving her head, Portman said that she was excited to have “the opportunity to throw away vanity for a little while and go around with no hair.”
Demi Moore in G.I. Jane
Like Natalie Portman, Demi Moore had her head shaved on screen, but instead of having someone else weild the razor, Demi shaved her head herself for her role as Lieutenant Jordan O’Neil is G.I. Jane. At the time, Moore said the experience didn’t bother her and that she was happy to have the whole ordeal caught on camera and over with so she could move on to the more physically taxing elements of her role. Remember her biceps at the time? So do we.
Kristen Stewart in The Runaways
She could have easily worn a wig, and it probably would have made more sense, given that Kristen Stewart was in the middle of filming the Twilight series when she accepted the role of Joan Jett in The Runaways. But when the real Joan Jett asked Stewart if she’d be willing to cut of her long Bella Swan locks in order to adopt Jett’s trademark shag for the part, Kristen went a long with it.
Keri Russell in Felicity
What do most girls do when we break up with a guy? We get a hair cut. Maybe it’s a way of letting go of the past, or maybe it’s a way of putting a new face forward for the future. Either way, we loved it when J.J. Abrams asked Keri Russell to cut off her signature long curly locks for the second season of Felicity after she breaks up with Ben. Sure, it was totally crazy, but aren’t all college girls just a little bit insane?
