The big question this weekend is will The Avengers cross the $100 million threshold once again, or will one of the four new releases give it too much competition. There’s another action blockbuster opening (this time based on a board game), two romantic comedy (one of which is based on a true story) and a new comedy from the mind that brought you Borat.
If you asked anyone which board game should and would be turned into a feature film, Battleship probably wouldn’t have been it. The movie however looks to have very little to do with the game itself, and has instead been turned into some sort of alien invasion movie. With young stars such as Alexander Skarsgard, Rihanna, Brooklyn Decker and Taylor Kitsch starring in this odds are it will only attract a younger crowd. If this one succeeds expect to see Hungry Hungry Hippos at a theater near you next summer.
What To Expect When You’re Expecting is the latest romantic comedy to star a whole lot of celebrities. Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock and many others stars in this flick based on the hit novel of the same name. It follows five interconnected couples who finds their lives turned upside down by impending parenthood. If Valentine’s Day and New Years Eve are any indication this one could disappear from theaters quickly.
Maggie Gyllenhaal stars in Hysteria, a small independent film based on the true story of how a doctor created the first vibrator for medical research. Gyllenhaal has long been known for her quirky role choices, and this one seems to be no different. It’ll probably have a longer life on DVD than it does in theaters.
Sacha Baron Cohen is back on the big screen. This time around he plays The Dictator of a small African country who finds himself the victim of an attempted assignation and impersonation, all in the attempt to bring democracy to his nation. Expect a crude and racist flick, that you will find yourself laughing at. This is sure to be another cult classic from the Borat star.
