Last year on HBO Games Of Thrones quickly became one of their most popular television series, and now just in time for Season 2 an exhibition comes to Toronto at the TIFF Bell Lightbox. And to make things even better it’s free.
From March 9th to the 18th you can take a trip to Westeros, and see costumes and props from the Games of Thrones. You can see one of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragon eggs, an assortment of swords and shields, tableware used in the series and six costumes. You can even see Robert Baratheon’s stag crown. There’s not much you can touch and feel, but you do have the opportunity to sit on the Iron Throne itself and have your picture taken while in it.
It’s always fascinating to see movie and television props, because you get a sense of how much work goes into producing them. In fact in a way you’ll get to see more than you would by watching it on a screen because it’s right in front of you. For instance you’ll get a chance to see the exquisite detail of the costumes, and the little things like the house symbols on the hilt of the swords. If you have a few minutes, you can sit down and watch one of the few documentaries playing around the exhibit. You can learn how the costumes were made, or see them filming on location in Ireland. The exhibit not only covers season 1, but has a few surprises from the upcoming second season as well. And for those looking for some of the macabre aspects of the series, you can even see the prop of Eddard Stark’s head on a stick.
If you are a fan of Games of Thrones, or are interested in the behind the scenes aspects of television shows and movies, this exhibition is a must see. Tickets are free, but you need to reserve them by visiting the TIFF Bell Lightbox or calling 416-599-TIFF. The exhibit is open daily from March 9 – 18 from 12-8. Tickets are approximately all ready 70% gone, but don’t fret, if you show up on the day you want to see it there is still a chance you’ll get in if you are willing to wait in line.
