V Magazine recently flew Valeria Lukyanova, aka “the Human Barbie,” to New York for a photo shoot, in part because they were just curious whether or not she really existed. Ever since the world started paying attention to Valeria in the spring of this year, thanks to an article that went viral on Jezebel, many people have just assumed she’s the product of our Photoshop-enhanced world. With her extremely tiny waist and Mattel-esque porportions, topped off with her bleached blonde hair, she would have to be an extraordinary freak of nature to actually be born this way.
Well, it turns out she does exist! The 21-year-old Ukrainian YouTube sensation whose videos have more than 16 million hits boarded a plane and arrived at her V Magazine photo shoot in NYC in the flesh. The internet starlet, who sometimes goes by the name “Amatue” and is the self-proclaimed “most famous woman of the Russian-speaking Internet,” even modeled various outfits for her fashion shoot with V. In the photo above, for instance, Valeria is wearing a bikini top by Tripp NYC, shorts by Theyskens’ Theory, sunglasses by Bernhard Willhelm, a belt by Michael Kors, and jewelry by Cartier. Not bad for her first American assignment!
We can’t imagine what the day on set with Valeria Lukyanova and photographer Sebastian Faena must have been like! In her interview with V Magazine, the human Barbie talked about her day job as a teacher at the international School of Out-of-Body Travel (we kid you not) and how she handles her fan base as well as the haters who obviously don’t believe her tiny waist, slender limbs and Barbie-like facial features are natural (she insists she was — in the words of Lady Gaga — born this way).
“Every good-looking woman with fine features and a slim figure looks like a doll. I won’t deny that I play along with people’s perceptions. I’m amused by the reactions. I don’t take it seriously,” Valeria told V in the article called “Living Doll.” Although Valeria may have sparked a trend among women wishing to look more doll-like, she was definitely one of the first women to gain internet fame with her Barbie-like appearance. You truly have to see the full photo shoot to believe it.
Valeria Lukyanova is just one of the women profiled in V Magazine’s “Girl Power” issue, which features Scarlett Johansson on the cover and Kate Moss and Rihanna in a seductive Mario Testino photo shoot.
