Musicals To See This Spring

We are lucky to live in a city that fully embraces the theatre and Toronto has been home to some amazing productions. Musicals, in particular, tell stories through song and can either bring books and movies to life or inspire them. From love stories to comedies to dramas, musicals can be enjoyed by people of all ages and backgrounds. Read on for some must-see musicals this spring.

The Bodyguard – On now until May 4th at Ed Mirvish Theatre

Based on the Whitney Houston movie, the musical follows the unexpected love story between a Hollywood starlet and her bodyguard. Brought together by a sexually-motivated stalker, the two face a number of obstacles that is sure to leave show goers on the edge of their seats. The musical is perfect for Whitney fans, as it will feature some of her greatest hits such as Saving All My Love, Greatest Love of All, and of course, I Will Always Love You.

The Book of Mormon – On now until April 16th at Princess of Wales Theatre

For anyone looking for a comedic musical, the Book of Mormon is a must-see. The nine-time Tony Award winning musical features 19 original songs and an evil war lord with a hilarious name.  It follows Mormon missionaries who discover their trip to Uganada is not what they had imagined. Written by the creators of South Park, The Book of Mormon just may serve up some laughs. 

Sousatzka – On now until April 9th at Elgin Theatre

Sousatzka is a musical that is new to the Broadway scene. It follows the story of Thema, a South African refugee with a talent for music, who is torn between his mother and his piano teacher. The musical, which features a unique blend of African and Eastern European culture and music, is based on a novel by Bernice Rubens which was also adapted into a movie.

Mary Poppins – On now until April 30th at Lower Ossington Theatre

If you’re excited for the upcoming movie remake of Mary Poppins, you’ll love the musical. Based on the original Disney movie, the musical follows the magical nanny as she changes the lives of those around her. It features fan favourites like Spoonful of Sugar and Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious, as well as new additional numbers.
