Mark your calendars art lovers, AGO is the only Canadian stop for the much anticipated Yayoi Kusama Infinity Mirrors exhibition! From March 3rd to May 27th 2018, the 87-year-old Japanese artist will be making a stop in Toronto as she embarks on her most significant North American Tour in 20 years. With only three other partnering museums debuting her work, the AGO provides Torontonians with a rare opportunity to celebrate the creativity of a living artist who, through her decades of work, has had a strong influence on art, design and contemporary culture.

Taking visitors on a unique sensory journey, the exhibit is set to feature six kaleidoscopic environments along-side whimsical installations, paintings, sculptures, and works on paper from the 1950’s—which showcase her lesser known collages—to present. Still active in her Tokyo studio, the exhibit will display some of Kusama’s newer, vibrant coloured paintings as well as her most recent infinity room design, All the Eternal Love I have for Pumpkins (2016), which highlights her signature yellow, dotted pumpkins.

The last stop in the exhibit—The Obliteration Room (2002)—is the most raved about installation in the gallery thanks to its invitation for help. Decorated in all white, The Obliteration Room welcomes visitors to cover the entirely furnished, domestic setting with multicoloured polka dot stickers. By turning visitors into artists, Kusama’s idea behind the all white room is to slowly, but jointly have the entire space pulsating in colour.

With the previous Los Angeles installation creating lots of buzz, the hype is definitely real here in Toronto! Tickets for what’s sure to be an extravagant exhibit went on sale to the general public on January 16th, with the next block of tickets going on sale March 6. Make sure to set an alarm to score a spot in the queue!
