Spring Makeup is All About Colour

Monday, April 19th, 2010

applyingmakeupYour local drug and department store makeup counters are showcasing this season’s best makeup trends and for spring/summer 2010 it’s all about bright pops of colour. Colours like corals, pinks and aquamarine are all making strong statements and are among the most popular colours of the season.

According to the experts, you shouldn’t attempt colour everywhere, the idea is a strong statement in one area, like your lips. Choose a soft coral lipstick or lip gloss for a pop of colour and style this season.

Speaking to the Los Angeles Times, makeup artist Carmindy of “What Not to Wear” has a few rules of thumb when picking lip color for her clients: “Porcelain- and fair-skinned ladies should use pinky nudes, cool pinks, pinky corals and cool reds. Medium- and olive-skinned beauties look best in tawny nudes, warm pinks, warm corals and true reds. And golden- and deep-skinned gals can use toffee nudes, deep pinks, orangey corals and blood reds.”

Other options to brighten up your look this season include a shot of pink on the apples of the cheeks or a lovely pastel eye colour (blue shades are quite popular right now).

With the blue skies overhead and the flowers in bloom, spring is the time to add a little colour to your life. No more of the drab winter blues to get you down. Real Style Network has found spring’s hottest lipstick shades, so that you can change your colour for spring. Here are the hottest lipstick colours for spring:

spring-lipstick-colours

1. Nude is all the rage everywhere from clothing to makeup. It may not be a bright splash of colour, but adding a nude lipstick will give you a whole new look. Nude lipsticks are great for girls who don’t want big, bold makeup. Our choice: Lorac Sheer Lipstick in Nude – $19.00

2. Thanks to Chanel, bright ruby red’s are hot this season. We saw it on the red carpet. Now get your own ruby red lipstick. This will glam up any look in an instant. Our choice: Revlon ColourBurst Lipstick in Ruby – $8.99

3. If you only want a tiny bit of colour this spring try a pale blush shade of lipstick. A blush lipstick can be just a shade lighter or darker than your lips to give you a hint of colour. This is a nice look for the day before you pull out the bold shades. Our choice: Maybelline Moisture Extreme Lipstick in Nude Blush – $4.49

4. Lipsticks are in this year, but don’t be sad if you are hooked on your lip gloss. If you want a gloss, find a matte shade of lip gloss for spring. Leave the shimmer and sparkles for your accessories. Our choice: Guerlain Cashmere Gloss Matte Lip Gloss – $28.00

5. Deep, rich berry shades are hot for spring. Cranberry and raspberry are the most popular. These are more traditional lipstick colours and you can find one that works with your skin tone. Our choice: L’Oreal Colour Riche Lipcolour in Raspberries – $8.95

Makeup Enters a Blue Period

Saturday, March 6th, 2010

applyingmakeup1According to many beauty insiders, blue is the new black.

Your favourite makeup counters are starting to offer more blue makeup eyeliners, mascara, eye shadows and even lipstick. It’s not the pastel blues from the past, this blue is bold and vibrant.

Makeup artists at counters across North America are also adding blue makeup to their repertoire. A recent article in Huffington Post discussed the topic and referenced recent Paris shows as well as advertising campaigns and magazines for starting the blue makeup trend.

You can try this trend easily and discreetly. Add hints of blue to your eyes with blue tinged eye shadow and even glam up your eyes with a navy or blue mascara. You’d be surprised at how much it brightens the eye area.

Some Real Style Network blue makeup favourites include Illamasqua powder eye shadow in Sadist and Victim. Yves Saint Laurent Volum Effet Faux Cils Mascara in Extreme Blue and 5 Colour Harmony for Eyes in 5 Riviera. NARS Glitter Pencil in Bains Douches and Dior Show Mascara in Azure Blue.

Experiment with colour this coming season! You can pick up these makeup favourites as well as many others at high-end department stores or your local Sephora.

Spring Makeup & Hair

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

With winter on its way out (thank goodness), it’s time to think about makeup and hair care for spring/summer 2010. Celebrity hair stylist Tony Masciangelo and top Canadian makeup artist Diana Carreiro spoke with the Vancouver Sun and offered their top tips and tricks for the coming seasons. For the full article, click here.

longhealthyhair2Q: What hairstyles are you seeing for spring?
TM: The current looks are long, healthy hair. The silhouettes are simple and wearable. To achieve these looks, you can round brush your hair (after applying mousse) to create volume. This will create a soft, sexy, bouncy blow-out. I suggest using Nexxus Maxify Volumizing Foam Styler. What this does is leaves you with really fresh, clean, easy, springtime kind of hair.

Q: Are there any must-have hair accessories?
TM: Definitely decorative elastics that will help you create a more playful look as seen in the Prada campaign, which featured pigtails. There is a youthfulness with hair that is going on. We see a lot of headbands in many soft colours such as rose, nude and salmon.

Q: What looks are you seeing when it comes to makeup?
DC: Orangey, red lips are big. It’s one of those colours that looks lovely with a tan or with pale skin. Mary Kay lip nectar in mango is really nice. It’s a sheer orangey-red, a little bit glossy, and it’s user friendly. Pink is also big for spring. The pink cheeks and pink lips combo is what makes it fresh for this year. I’d recommend Benetint rose tinted lip and cheek stain. It creates a pretty look and is a very versatile two-in-one product.
