Sexy, Full Hair for 2010

Friday, January 8th, 2010

Voluminous hair is making a comeback.  As more and more stars are opting for fuller, more voluminous hair, stylists and hair care companies are once again trying to find ways to get the high-volume looks without a lot of hassle or product.

Hair BeautyIn the 80’s (the big hair decade), women achieved volume by teasing, mousse and a ton of hair spray.  According to celebrity hairstylist Philip Pelusi, who is well-known for his signature VolumetricR haircutting technique, women today still crave volume, but don’t necessarily want the “big hair” look that is outdated and requires too much gel, spray and teasing.

Here are Philip Pelusi’s tips for achieving volume in 2010 - without looking like you’re in the wrong decade:

1. Use a volumizing conditioner and shampoo: Volumizing products (such as the P2 InCrease Volumizze Shampoo and Conditioner) are formulated not to weigh hair down.  Be careful to apply conditioner only to ends.

2. Give Your Roots a Boost: Apply a root lifter before blow-drying, from midshaft to root (try Mod di Phy Define Root Lift Volumize Spray).

3. Blow dry for “oomph”: Lift sections of hair toward the sky as you blow-dry, directing hot air toward your scalp.

4. Don’t blow-dry upside-down: To keep volume moderized, do not flip your head over.

Frédéric Fekkai Goes Mass Market

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

greathairSo the big news over the past couple of days has been that Frédéric Fekkai is going mass market and will begin selling their products at drugstores and low/mid-range department stores.  Frédéric Fekkai has long been considered a staple of upscale hair care, but now it’s for the masses.

Not surprisingly, Frédéric Fekkai’s biggest retailer Sephora, is immediately pulling them off stores shelves.

If you’re looking for high-end products at your average retailer this is good news for you.  Expect to see the classic Frédéric Fekkai, but don’t expect a change in prices.  It’ll still run you between $20-$30 for the line.

L’Oreal Models Use Hair Extensions

Friday, November 27th, 2009

ccole.JPGIn today’s beauty news, L’Oréal Hair Care is coming under fire because the L’Oreal commercials with Cheryl Cole feature Cheryl wearing hair extensions.

Cheryl Cole is a member of the incredibly popular girl group Girls Aloud and is a fan of hair extensions.  While its fine to use them for day-to-day personal use, critics say to allow them to be used in L’Oreal hair ad campaigns is unethical and misleading.  That bouncy gorgeous hair isn’t all because of the use of L’Oreal.  Young women in particular shouldn’t be deceived into thinking it is.

We at CanadaBeauty understand the use of extensions and other beauty products during the promotional process, but encourage companies to be open about it.

HAIR CARE - READER QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Monday, September 28th, 2009

straighthair.JPG

I straighten by hair with a ceramic straightner but after a few hours it becomes wavy, is there any product you would recommend that can help keep it straight? - Liz, New Westminster, British Columbia

I find that I get better results if I try to blow out the hair first to a smoother finish.  I will use a straightening serum like Bumble and Bumble’s Straight followed by Bumble’s Holding Spray or Spray de Mode (these help defy humidity and protect the hair from the heat of the iron).  If you live in a humid or rainy climate, like New West, protecting your hair with a hat also helps.

HAIR CARE - READER QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

short60.JPGWhat is the hottest style right now?  I want to get a cut and style and I want it to be fashionable and trendy (I’m 20 yrs old and don’t mind going drastic!).  It seems like a lot of celebrities are going shorter.  Is this the trend right now? - Sara, Toronto, Ontario

If you are looking for the hottest style, I would look to celebrities like Victoria Beckham for her short and textured cut.  It is important to find a stylist who can work with your type of hair and personalize the cut for you and your lifestyle.

HAIR CARE - READER QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

b500.JPGI love to dye my own hair and use Nice & Easy most often.  Lately, I have noticed my hair has gotten very brassy.  Its naturally strawberry blonde and I wanted it blonder, but now it’s kind of getting orangey in spots.  What can I do?  Can I fix at home or do I need to visit a salon to fix this and prevent future problems?  -  Bridgette, Vancouver, British Columbia

Most store brands cannot lift as high as professional products.  It is difficult to colour your hair yourself.

Most people tend to overlap or pull the colour through to the ends.  This causes colour build up which causes the overall colour to become darker and duller.  Colour can’t lift colour either.  I highly recommend visiting a salon in your area with colour expertise.

DAVID BABAII & KATE HUDSON LAUNCH ECO-FRIENDLY HAIR CARE LINE

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

18KATE.JPGLast month, one of our favourite actresses, Kate Hudson and her hairstylist David Babaii launched hair care line David Babaii for WildAid.

The David Babaii for WildAid line caught my interest because of its natural, eco-friendly concept.  This hair care line is free of sulfates, parabens and toxic petrochemicals.  The products are not tested on animals, but on Kate Hudson herself (and let’s face it, we all love Kate’s healthy, full hair)!

The line is made from an exclusive blend of exotic and wild, natural and renewable ingredients including Blue Algae, White Ginger, Cupuacu Butter and Volcanic Ash.  Its already achieved great acclaim winning numerous awards including “Best Green Hair Care” brand by InStyle Magazine and the “2009 Reader’s Favorites” hairspray category winner for the Mise en Plis Extra Hold Styling Spray by New Beauty Magazine.
david11.JPGWith 10% of the profits going to WildAid (the global wildlife conservation organization www.wildaid.org) it’s just another great reason to give this line a try.

To get more info on David Babaii and Kate Hudson, check out the David Babaii for WildAid web site www.db4wildaid.com.  The entire hair care line is available in both Canada and the United States and can be purchased through The Shopping Channel, Sally Beauty Supply and by calling 1-888-202-0888.
