Spring Makeup & Hair

Thursday, March 4th, 2010

With winter on its way out (thank goodness), it’s time to think about makeup and hair care for spring/summer 2010. Celebrity hair stylist Tony Masciangelo and top Canadian makeup artist Diana Carreiro spoke with the Vancouver Sun and offered their top tips and tricks for the coming seasons. For the full article, click here.

longhealthyhair2Q: What hairstyles are you seeing for spring?
TM: The current looks are long, healthy hair. The silhouettes are simple and wearable. To achieve these looks, you can round brush your hair (after applying mousse) to create volume. This will create a soft, sexy, bouncy blow-out. I suggest using Nexxus Maxify Volumizing Foam Styler. What this does is leaves you with really fresh, clean, easy, springtime kind of hair.

Q: Are there any must-have hair accessories?
TM: Definitely decorative elastics that will help you create a more playful look as seen in the Prada campaign, which featured pigtails. There is a youthfulness with hair that is going on. We see a lot of headbands in many soft colours such as rose, nude and salmon.

Q: What looks are you seeing when it comes to makeup?
DC: Orangey, red lips are big. It’s one of those colours that looks lovely with a tan or with pale skin. Mary Kay lip nectar in mango is really nice. It’s a sheer orangey-red, a little bit glossy, and it’s user friendly. Pink is also big for spring. The pink cheeks and pink lips combo is what makes it fresh for this year. I’d recommend Benetint rose tinted lip and cheek stain. It creates a pretty look and is a very versatile two-in-one product.

treatedhair1With fans like Nicole Ritchie and Jennifer Aniston, the Brazilian Blowout is fast becoming the hottest hair treatment in salons nationwide.

The Brazilian Blowout is a professional smoothing treatment developed by top stylist Mauricio Ribeiro. The results are frizz-free, relaxed waves, or straight hair that requires minimal styling for up to 12 weeks.

The Brazilian Blowout is offered in high-quality salons and relies upon the Brazilian Blowout line of hair products to treat and prep hair for smoothing. The end result is smooth, healthy, frizz-free hair with improved shine.

No harsh chemicals are used and the entire process takes about 90 minutes. There’s no downtime, so you can wash and style your hair as per your normal routine right away.

Grey Hair Is Hot New Trend

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Society used to fear the dreaded first grey hairs as a sign that we were past our prime. Now grey hair is the hottest trend showing up on celebrities and runways.

Grey hair is the hottest new trend in hair care and fashion. Supermodel Kate Moss dyed her hair grey for the launch of her Longchamp purse collection last month, the models in the recent Chanel show had grey hair and even 13 year old blogger Tavi Gevinson just dyed her locks grey.

According to The Toronto Star the trend of grey hair first became popular in Asia as a break from basic black.

They say the trick is to not go all grey. They suggest streaks of grey through a darker hair colour. A man could get silver highlights in his hair. The other option is to stop dying your hair and celebrate your natural grey.

Stylists say grey hair can make you look younger, cool and rebellious.

Finding do it yourself grey hair dye might be tricky since right now most colouring kits are made to cover grey, not enhance it.

Kate Hudson Hair Care

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

katehudsonKate Hudson has been receiving a lot of positive pr for her recent looks at high profile awards shows like the Golden Globes and SAG Awards. From her hair to her gowns, she’s been looking fantastic.

Back in 2009, we featured Kate’s hair care collection on our blog. It’s a collection she created with her hairstylist David Babaii. The collection is titled David Babaii for WildAid. We have since tried the collection and have become big fans of the David Babaii for WildAid Shampoo and Conditioner.

Initially the David Babaii for WildAid line caught our interest because of its natural, eco-friendly concept. This hair care line is free of sulfates, parabens and toxic petrochemicals. The products are not tested on animals, but on Kate Hudson herself.  The line is made from an exclusive blend of exotic and wild, natural and renewable ingredients including Blue Algae, White Ginger, Cupuacu Butter and Volcanic Ash. Its already achieved great acclaim winning numerous awards including “Best Green Hair Care” brand by InStyle Magazine and the “2009 Reader’s Favorites” hairspray category winner for the Mise en Plis Extra Hold Styling Spray by New Beauty Magazine.davidbabaiiwildaid11

With 10% of the profits going to WildAid (the global wildlife conservation organization www.wildaid.org) it’s just another great reason to give this line a try. The collection is available in both Canada and the United States and can be purchased through RiteAid, Ulta, The Shopping Channel and a variety of other retailers.

Kate Moss Goes Grey

Thursday, January 28th, 2010

At last night’s Kate Moss for Longchamp launch party Kate sported a new grey blond bob. Her hair was very layered and her traditionally blonde hair was spiked with grey streaks. With her tanned skin, it didn’t look bad, but we didn’t love it.  It makes her look older than her 36 years of age.

Grey hair has been seen on the recent runway shows with Chanel’s spring collection featuring models with grey streaks.

According to Hello Magazine, it isn’t likely the look will catch on. The technical director at Richard Ward’s salon spoke to the magazine and said, “Grey hair is draining on the complexion,” he says. “Ashen colour absorbs light, rather than reflecting it, so it can be very dulling.”

Golden Globes Beauty

Monday, January 18th, 2010

drewbarrymore1In today’s beauty news, the Golden Globes were every bit as glamorous as we at Real Style Network expected.

When it came to beauty, many of the actresses opted for minimalist updos (some messy, some more chic).  This was an especially flattering and smart look considering the rainy weather.  Drew Barrymore, Marion Cottilard, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Nicole Kidman were just a few of the stars who opted for an updo.  Not surprisingly, many stars actually skipped the red carpet altogether to avoid the poor weather.  The stars who did stick it out on the red carpet found that their updos were generally safe and their gowns were only mildly spotty (the Beverly Hilton supplied umbrellas to all celebrities prior to arriving on the red carpet).

Another beauty trend spotted on the carpet?  Dark nails.  Stars like Marion Cottilard, Jennifer Aniston, and Gabourey Sidibe all sported dark nail polish which complimented their black and jewel tone gowns.

Soft pink lips and natural, porcelain skin were also big trends with stars like Julia Roberts, Kate Hudson, Chloe Sevigny and Kristin Bell all sporting natural, rosy makeup.  The one star beauty look we didn’t love?  We thought Fergie was a little overdone with her tanned ski and flat brown hair (although her periwinkle Elie Saab gown was lovely).  We think she would have benefitted from a chic updo and a little less self tanner.  For more info on Golden Globe fashions, check out our fashion blog here.

The classic fragrance Angel by Thierry Mugler has the Angel Hair Mist by Thierry Mugler ($35).  It seduces with passionate notes like honey, dewberry, vanilla, patchouli and chocolate.  This hair fragrance is long lasting and has a stronger scent than many others.  Perfect for a club night or long evening out.

Clean Hair Fragrance by Fusion Brands ($39) is for those of you that don’t like traditional fragrances, but appreciate clean and soapy scents that smell like you just got out of the shower.  A couple of sprays and your hair smells fresh all day.  Perfect for everyday wear and great in the summertime.
