Canadian Designers Showcase Stunning Designs On The Yorkdale FashionCAN Runway- Day 1

This past Sunday and Monday, the FashionCAN Spring/Summer 2017 runway shows made a splash at Toronto’s Yorkdale Shopping Centre. In honour of Yorkdale’s newly revealed expansion, the first ever FashionCAN show was presented by the Canadian Arts and Fashion Awards and featured a number of established and emerging names in Canadian fashion. Real Style was in the front rows embracing the latest in the world of Canuck style, which ranged from cozy knits to eye-catching gowns.

At Mackage, Montreal-based designers Eran Elfassy and Elisa Dahan stuck to a traditional aesthetic of red, white and subtle neutrals. From black and red plaids to sumptuous fabrics, the looks on display channelled the beauty of Canadiana. Models strut the catwalk in luxurious grey wool coats, white puffy coats and white and grey patterned knits.

Meanwhile, Toronto eveningwear designer Stephan Caras and his son Kyriako captured their traditional passion for femininity and elegance on the catwalk. The Greek-Canadian father and son duo sent models down the runway in pink and yellow brocade gowns with voluminous ball skirts. Sheer bodices, soft ethereal pinks and baby blues, dainty fringe and asymmetrical hemlines all offered a touch of romance.

At Lucian Matis, the Romanian-born designer stuck to basic black and white, oversized splashy florals and strapless black jumpsuits. Simplicity and elegance played a major role, with gleaming gold accessories with a geometric design and plenty of delicate lace. From the occasional vibrant print to embroidered florals, Matis incorporated a mixture of tropical colours with classic neutrals.

Toronto-based designer Mikhael Kale presented an edgy collection, which combined unexpected elements such as cropped sweatshirts and pale pink designs with oversized V-necks. Flowing sheer dresses, lace-up stitching and plunging necklines also dominated the collection. Meanwhile, long coats and fierce snakeskin prints brought texture and detail to the entire line.
