New York Fashion Week Spring 2017 Roundup

By: Sarah Kardash

With the Spring 2017 runway shows in the Big Apple drawing to a grand finale this week, New York Fashion Week has revealed everything from bohemian printed frocks to velvet dresses and embroidered silk gowns. Real Style was in the front rows at the New York shows, reporting on the latest and greatest from the American catwalks.

Rebecca Minkoff brought the runway to the people directly, by staging her show outside of her New York flagship store. The designer stunned the audience once again with her “see now, buy now” show which was a huge success. Minkoff’s collection featured breezy boho dresses in floral prints with lace up details. Models walked the cobblestone catwalk in knee high velvet boots, as well as plush velvet booties, paired with super chic striped prints and standout pea coats. Minkoff tapped into her signature rock star vibes, with the finale featuring all models wearing leather moto jackets which had messages printed on the back.

Former Spice Girl turned fashion icon Victoria Beckham wowed the crowds in New York with her elegant and traditional show. The British designer featured traditional fabrics like crushed velvet, pleated leather and satin. The sorbet palette of colours including bright peppermint and bold orange, which were beautifully draped, had a gentle, fresh silhouette look. Beckham used bra tops to add drapey detailing, including stray straps, hanging belt ties and messenger bags to complete the look. The looks were quite revealing and risqué, yet were balanced with summer canvas knee-boots. The lightness and gentle femininity brought life to the collection.

Jenny Packham’s runway show proved why she is a favourite among the celebrity set. Her latest creations go beyond classic glamour, as they offers a glittery edge with embellishment and embroidery. Models graced the runway wearing extravagant long dresses in gold, bronze and black with exquisite beading. Yet there was no shortage of colour, with pinks and reds making bold statements with dramatic, draped sleeves. A show-stopping sequin striped wide-leg pair of trousers combined with a double breasted ivory silk blazer made its way down the catwalk, proving Packham’s psychedelic style. Many of the models also wore oversized oval sunglasses fitting perfectly with the show’s overall aesthetic, a glamorous defiance of rock and roll fashion.

Dennis Basso’s collection was inspired by the spirit of the modern world voyager. The show featured various hand embroidered gowns in earthy neutral tones. Basso experimented with delicate designs and handmade gowns and dresses. The adventurous collection contained multiple beaded lace and chiffon blouses, paired with both pleated and chiffon skirts for a feminine, breezy look. The models made a splash in white ermine shirts and kimonos, for a furry accent. Meanwhile, the chiffon and lace gowns brought a beautiful finishing touch to the show.
