As the designer behind Canadian menswear label Dalla, Hussein Dhalla is known for his sleek and androgynous aesthetic. Dhalla, who is based in Richmond Hill, Ontario, has a passion for modern yet edgy designs. From sharply tailored blazers to fitted trousers, Dalla pieces are traditionally dark and broody.

As part of the White Cashmere 2016 Collection at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the up-and-coming designer traded his trademark silky textures for bathroom tissue. Dhalla unveiled an intricate heavenly white robe, which was crafted out of the unconventional yet delicate material.

Real Style: What originally inspired you to pursue fashion as a career?

Hussein: I had an ex-partner who really introduced me. I was always into fashion; I had my own clothing store. This ex-partner really pushed me to go into fashion and bring my designs to life.

Real Style: How has your experience been working in the Canadian fashion industry?

Hussein: We have a market that is growing in Toronto, but it’s not as big as the other cities yet. We have people who are helping us, like [Toronto Men’s Fashion Week founder] Jeff Rustia who is putting Toronto Men’s Fashion Week together. That’s really putting us on the centre stage.

Real Style: Do you have any favourite materials to work with?

Hussein: I love using silk, so I would say that is my favourite fabric to use.

Real Style: Describe your favourite fashion memory.

Hussein: My favourite fashion memory was my first runway show at my new brand Dalla, going backstage and just celebrating with my team. Just feeling the success of that show, and launching as a new label.

Real Style: Tell us about your favourite style essentials for Fall 2016.

Hussein: I definitely think it would be something that is oversized. An oversized look, a lot of streetwear is coming back in. I think that is something that can be used for both men and women.
